Quintero Rivas, Good Knot Goals as Men's Soccer Holds On for the 10-Man Victory against Wheeling

The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team took their road season finale over Wheeling on Wednesday night by a final score of 2-1.

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team took their road season finale over Wheeling on Wednesday night by a final score of 2-1.

Frostburg dominated on the offensive portion early on, with junior Carlos Quintero Rivas firing a shot over top the goal in the first two minutes of the game.  A few minutes later Wheeling sent in their first try of the game, aiming it a little too high and sending it over top the goal as well.  Sophomore Hugo Portillo and freshman Mason Salvadge ripped the next two attempts for the Bobcats, with the Cardinals sending in two more as well, but neither team was able to connect.  WU was given a corner kick, looking to put a strike on the board, but their next two shots were unable to connect as freshman Jan Foret picked up a save in goal.  Both teams traded two pairs of shots, before freshman Christian Mathieu found Quintero Rivas for a perfect play to send the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 FSU lead with just over five minutes left in the half.

Both teams saw a slow end to the first 45 minutes, battling the ball back and forth for possession as Wheeling ripped one more shot at goal, hoping to tie the game at the break, but again was denied by Foret to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Frostburg at the end of the half.

The Cardinals saw multiple looks to tie the game in the beginning of the second half, sending in the first two shots, both which became saves for Foret.  The Bobcats were given a red card in the first few minutes of the second, causing them to be short a man.  FSU was still able to drive their offense, putting shots on goal to hopefully extend their lead, with Portillo firing away another attempt but put it just high.  WU started to dominate possession in their offensive half of the field, sending in five straight shots, still looking to equalize.  With around 15 minutes left in the half, Frostburg was able to regain possession and see a shot at goal, as freshman Dominic Good gave the Bobcats an insurance goal, pushing the game to 2-0.

Both goalkeepers picked up saves in the final minutes, as Wheeling continued to push and set up their offense for a chance to get on the board, but were unable to do so.  Foret made a save on one, as senior Andre Tenorio tried an attempt at goal but was also denied by the keeper.  With just a minute and a half left in regulation, a foul was called on FSU in the box, setting up the Cardinals for a penalty.  WU was able to slice it home to cut their deficit in half, but with time not in their favor, the Bobcats were able to hang on for the 10-man 2-1 victory.

Wheeling led in shots 19-9 with eight being on goal, while five were on goal for Frostburg.  The Cardinals also held the advantage in corners 4-2, while Foret made a solid seven saves in goal.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-6-1 on the season, while Wheeling falls to 2-10-4.  The Bobcats return home for their regular season finale, where they welcome No. 2 Charleston (WV) to Bobcat Stadium for the team's Senior Day game on Sunday, November 3 at 2 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
