Second Half Offense Drives Senators to Win Over Men's Basketball
ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell 108-94 against Davis Elkins on the road Saturday.
Graduate Kyle Whippen got FSU off to a positive start, scoring the first four points of the game on a pair of free throws and a layup, while junior Mike Montano nailed a three to get out to an 8-5 lead. D&E then locked down defensively, holding the Bobcats without a point for over four minutes while building up an 18-8 advantage. Montano and Whippen combined to score the next six for Frostburg, then junior Zane McCarty brought the deficit down to four on a pull-up trey.
After back-to-back Senator buckets, FSU went on a 17-2 run that began with Whippen converting an and-one and Finefrock getting a quick steal-and-score. Montano added a layup and two at the charity stripe, while Finefrock knocked down a pair of threes and redshirt freshman DJ Daniel threw down a dunk after sophomore Trey Simmons' steal to surge ahead 36-29.
The sides then went back-and-forth, with Davis & Elkins getting a few points off of free throws and Montano hitting a floater and back-to-back triples to lead by 10 with just under five to go. A quick 9-1 Senator run brought them back to within two, as McCarty and Montano netted either side of freebies by Finefrock in hopes of getting some breathing room. D&E wouldn't let up, trading scores with Montano before hitting a three and back-to-back lay-ins looking to take a halftime lead, however McCarty scored just before the buzzer to go into the break narrowly ahead 58-57.
Over the first three minutes of the start of the second half, the sides traded scores with Simmons getting into the lane and Daniel hitting from deep before netting a layup of his own to maintain the one-point advantage. As they had done in the first period, the Senators turned defense into offense, holding FSU scoreless for over four minutes while hitting three treys en route to a stunning 83-66 lead.
Montano finally ended the drought on a layup after a block by Whippen started a fastbreak, as he also scored from close range before Davis & Elkins made a pair at the line to remain up by 18. Simmons and Montano then both went perfect from the stripe, with the latter adding a scoop-and-score in hopes of getting a spark to pull within 89-76 with eight minutes to go. D&E wouldn't let the Bobcats get closer, matching offensively every step of the way while extending their advantage to 21.
Simmons scored the next four for Frostburg but the lead proved too much to cut into, as redshirt freshman Max McFarland and redshirt sophomore Blake Burrows netted the final six points for the visitors in the 108-84 final.
Montano led the way for FSU with a 32-10 double-double, as Simmons (15), Whippen (14) and Finefrock (10) all also reached double-digit scoring.
