Shields Wins Long Jump in First Day of MEC Outdoor Championships

The Frostburg State Men's Track & Field team went home fourth overall after the first day of the MEC Outdoor Championships on Sunday.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Track & Field team went home fourth overall after the first day of the MEC Outdoor Championships on Sunday.
 
Freshman Nate Shields had the top performance of the opening day, winning the long jump at 6.99m. In the javelin, sophomore Scott Haste turned in a career performance, earning fourth overall with a throw of 44.85m, blowing past his previous personal record in the process.
 
Junior Marquise Burks found himself in first place after the first five events of the decathlon, winning four of them. He was victorious in the 100 meters (11.26), shot put (12.38m), high jump (1.86m) and the 400 meters (53.12), setting a new personal best in the 100. Sophomore Mason Reed also impressed in the event, finding himself in third after finishing second in both the long jump (6.22m) and the high jump (1.80m).
 
Closing out the first day of competition in the hammer throw, sophomore Ben Treat threw a career-best 41.53m.
