Cuadros Brace Leads Men's Soccer Past Hilltoppers in Road Victory
WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. – The Frostburg State men's soccer picked up a road win against West Liberty, as two goals from graduate Mateo Cuadros took down the Hilltoppers 2-1.
WLU had the first chance of the game, which was put high four and a half minutes in. After 10 minutes with little action, the Hilltoppers hit both posts on back-to-back attempts, but the Bobcats managed to avoid conceding. FSU finally got their way up the field five minutes later, as a long ball over the top by junior Anthony Diaz found sophomore Andrew Denard, who crossed to the top of the box, where senior Carlos Quintero Rivas set up Cuadros for the opening goal, slotting a low shot into the bottom right corner to put FSU ahead 1-0.
The next five minutes featured end-to-end action, with sophomore keeper Jan Foret clawing the ball away from under the crossbar on a flicked header, while Rivas was denied by Shai'ya Fitzgerald after being played into a one-on-one chance. Foret then made an easy save at his near post on an effort that lacked power to trouble him. As the half entered the final 20 minutes, chances became hard to come by, with the only effort coming on a WLU corner with a looping header grabbed by Foret to end the half up 1-0.
Just seven minutes into the second half, Cuadros curled in a corner kick toward the back post and deflected off a Hilltopper defender into the back of the net, doubling the Bobcats' lead. Looking to extend the lead, FSU upped their pressure, as Rivas blasted a shot over the bar before Foret parried away a rocketed shot a minute later. Freshman Frank Stare looked as if he had scored Frostburg's third after being found on a great run by senior Jason Guevara, but his effort was deflected just wide of the post.
With 20 minutes to go, Foret made another comfortable save on a shot from just outside the box that was straight at him. He was called into action again five minutes later, this time needing to dive to his right to keep out a volley from 10 yards out. As the clock ticked down to 11 minutes, WLU gave themselves a lifeline, as a cross into the box was put in by Travis Scandalis, bringing them to within 2-1. Despite the momentum, the Hilltoppers were held one wayward effort from deep, as the Bobcats held on for the one-goal win.
The hosts held a 10-6 advantage in shots, with six on target to Frostburg's four, as Foret made five saves in net.
With the win, FSU improves to 5-6-2, while West Liberty drops to 4-6-3. The Bobcats will next travel to Charleston (WV) on Wednesday, October 22 for a 7 p.m. match. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
