Women's Wrestling Places 2nd Overall at Regional Championships
TIFFIN, Ohio – The Frostburg State women's wrestling team took second overall at the NCWWC Region IV Championships, with three wrestlers becoming regional champions and eight overall advancing to the national championships.
The Bobcats second season has continued to be successful, as just one year after having three wrestlers at the region tournament, FSU took 14 this season, with more than half advancing to the national championships. Sophomore Jocelyn Cacek (207), freshman Amber Hunter-Snyder(145) and sophomore Brianna Holcomb(131) all took first place in their respective brackets to secure individual titles. Overall, the Bobcats scored 118.5 points to put FSU in second place overall, trailing only Gannon who totaled 144.5.
Cacek took the 207 title with three wins on the day, all of them coming by pin for a total 21 points for the Bobcats. Hunter-Snyder, the 145 winner, picked up 22.5 team points, winning four matches with three falls and a tech fall on the day. Holcomb finished first in the 131 division and added 21 team points to the total in an all-Frostburg final with junior Solana Mottala, who picked up a pair of falls and a tech fall.
Sophomore Jada Fowler came in second place at 124, only coming up short to the winner from Gannon, earning a pinfall and a narrow 7-6 decision to reach the final. Senior Shani Tyson was the 138 runner up, having added another tech fall and fall before dropping a tight match that went to a 6-3 decision. Junior Jada Arnold and sophomore Maria Hiles finished third and fourth, respectively at 180, being paired against each other in the third-place match, combining for three pins and a pair of tech falls.
Frostburg had 33 wins overall on the day and will hope to carry that momentum into the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships. The national tournament is held from Friday, March 7 until Saturday, March 8 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
