Stone, Haney Knot Pair of Goals Each as Women's Lacrosse Falls to #16 Griffins
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team fell to No. 16 Seton Hill on Wednesday evening in Bobcat Stadium, concluding their five-game home slate to start the season.
Frostburg scooped up the draw control right off the bat, with junior Emily Lamoreaux sending in the first shot of the game, hitting the post. Lamoreaux picked up her attempt, setting up junior Sydney Stone for a try at goal as well, with her try also hitting the post. Seton Hill took the rebound, heading down field to only run in to junior Jessie Bare, who was credited with her first caused turnover of the game. Both teams then traded turnovers, with the Griffins ending up with the ball and slicing home their first goal for a 1-0 lead. SHU continued their momentum with a trio of goals to add to their total, moving up 4-0 at the 7:55 mark. Lamoreaux fired away another shot that was saved by Seton Hill's keeper, with sophomore Maya Mosslih being given a CT on the other end. Graduate Camden DeMaio saw a caused turnover on the defensive effort as well, setting herself up for an attempt at goal, but aimed just high. Lamoreaux sent in one more shot for the Bobcats by the end of the quarter, as FSU's defense blocked the Griffins' next attempt, before SHU sliced one more in the back of the net for a 5-0 lead after the first.
Seton Hill started out the second with back-to-back shots, with senior Nicole Gray seeing two saves right away. DeMaio traded shots with SHU for Frostburg's first attempt at offense in the quarter, as Gray stood in the way of two more tries from the Griffins. With almost four minutes gone in the second, SHU got on the board to advance their lead to 6-0. Gray racked up another save in goal, before Seton Hill slid one by again for a 7-0 game. Both teams worked on the defensive effort, with the Griffins coughing up some turnovers from FSU. Lamoreaux weaved her way in for another shot, but once again was denied. With under five left in the half, SHU tallied one more one to jump ahead 8-0. Gray worked her way to three more saves to end the half, but Seton Hill put up one more goal to lead 9-0 at the break.
After a lightening delay to begin the third, Frostburg came out with energy, ripping three shots in hopes of their first goal. Seton Hill denied any luck for FSU, snatching their first goal of the half to go up 10-0. The Bobcats continued their surge at offense, with DeMaio, Lamoreaux, and junior Neila Haney all firing away looks at a score, but were all still unable to find the back of the net. Both teams swapped a turnover before the Griffins took another rip at goal, as off a SHU turnover, Stone was awarded a free position, striking one home for Frostburg to put the Bobcats on the board. Right off the draw control, Seton Hill took the goal right back, going up 11-1. With two minutes left in the third, Stone gave FSU another goal, this time off an assist from Haney to put the game at 11-2. Both teams battled as time rounded out, with SHU knotting a buzzer beater goal to lead 12-2 heading into the fourth.
The Griffins did not let up to open the final quarter of play, scoring a goal in the first minute of the fourth. Gray saved the next shot by Seton Hill, with junior Izzy Kelly seeing a caused turnover on defense, as the time ticked down to 11 minutes. Off change of possession, FSU marched down field with Haney earning herself a goal for a 13-3 score. Haney added another one to her total not quite two minutes later, when senior Kerri Hayes dished it off for a 13-4 game. Hayes then took a try at goal but was blocked by SHU's defense, as Gray blocked the next shot from the Griffins down on the other end. With under four to play, Seton Hill put one more on the board to end their night, succeeding off a free position shot. Gray picked up one more save to end the game, as Hayes finally knotted a goal off a free position attempt, leaving the final score at 14-5.
Stone and Haney finished with two goals each for Frostburg, with Haney dishing out an assist and Hayes seeing a goal and an assist. Kelly and Mosslih both took a pair of CT's, with the latter scooping three ground balls as well. Gray finished with 13 total saves in goal.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 3-2 on the season, while Seton Hill improves to 2-1. The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, March 8 at 12 PM when they travel to face Shepherd in their first road game of 2025. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
