Football Announces Six-Year Schedule Agreement with Shepherd
FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State University and Shepherd University have announced the agreement to play each other over the next six football seasons.
Just over 60 miles and a state line separate Frostburg and Shepherd, but over four decades have passed since they last played each other. With the announcement of a six-year agreement, the competition hiatus between the teams comes to an end.
The schedule agreement has the first match up set as the 2025 season opener for both teams, as the series will look to alternate home and away throughout the agreement. The first contest is set for Saturday, August 30, where the series will kick off with a night game in Bobcat Stadium.
"We are extremely excited to have signed a six-year agreement with Frostburg State University as a non-conference opponent. This allows both teams to have a day trip to reduce costs and it will bring a good gate for the home team since we are so close. The Frostburg State matchup brings an exciting and competitive rivalry to our schedule." – Carrie Bodkins, Shepherd Director of Athletics
FSU is a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC) ever since joining NCAA Division II in 2019. The Bobcats finished up the 2024 season with a record of 6-5 under Head Coach Eric Wagoner, who will be going into his fourth year leading Frostburg with an overall record of 21-11 with the team.
"We are excited to add someone of the caliber of Shephard to our schedule. It is always beneficial to have a strong regional schedule. When you add in the proximity of the two universities it only made sense that we open our season playing each other." – Eric Wagoner, Head Football Coach
Shepherd is a part of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), having joined the conference in 2019 as well. The Rams also showed a record of 6-5 in the 2024 season, being led by Head Coach Ernie McCook, who took over the program in 2018 and currently holds a 58-18 overall record with the team.
"We are excited to sign a six year agreement with Frostburg State as our non-conference opponent. This is an in-region opener against a first class and well-respected football program. This game will bring great enthusiasm and energy for DII football in the local area. Go Rams!" – Ernie McCook, Head Football Coach
The two teams have faced off a total of 12 times in their history, with the last game being played in 1981. As both teams compete in Super Region I, the agreement extends through Fall of 2030.
