Stare Nets Stunner as Men's Soccer Takes Down WVWC in Regular Season Finale

The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 on the road to conclude their regular season on Sunday afternoon.

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 3-1 on the road to conclude their regular season on Sunday afternoon.

Four minutes in, WVWC had the first chance of the game, as sophomore Jan Foret reached up in goal to collect a cross that was traveling towards the net. It took another 10 minutes for FSU to register their first efforts, both coming from sophomore Max McGinnis, who had one shot blocked and the follow-up go wide of the near post.

Wesleyan earned a pair of corners just under 20 minutes in but would only result in one shot that went wide left. WVWC's defense made it difficult for Frostburg to put shots on goal, deflecting efforts from both senior Carlos Quintero Rivas and junior Anthony Diaz. With 13 minutes until the half, Rivas latched onto a through ball from sophomore Dom Good and charged into the box, cutting inside on his left foot and firing home for the lead.

Just five minutes later, FSU went on the attack again, as a cross into the box was deflected out to freshman Frank Stare, who powered a volley into the top left corner for a stunner and a 2-0 advantage. Wesleyan looked to get an answer on the board before the break, but Foret produced a pair of saves diving low to his right to preserve the 2-0 halftime score.

Both teams struggled to put shots on goal to begin the second period, with WVWC putting one wide and another pair high, while freshman Tristan Ruble put an effort over the bar for Frostburg. Stare then looked to double his tally 14 minutes in, but his long-distance effort was parried away by keeper Matteo Marciani.

FSU wouldn't have to wait long for their third, however, as Stare dribbled his way past three Wesleyan defenders inside the box before laying the ball on a plate for Diaz to sweep home on his left foot. WVWC continued to have trouble testing Foret, placing another four efforts either high or wide as the game entered the final 15 minutes.

Wesleyan eventually was able to break up the shutout bid, capitalizing on a giveaway at the back that eventually allowed Ahmed Abdelsalam to curl the ball up and over new sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Taylor. With time running down, WVWC had three more efforts, of which two were blocked and another went high as the contest ended with the 3-1 FSU victory.

Wesleyan held a 16-9 advantage in shots, though only had one more on target than Frostburg's four.

With the win, FSU ends their regular season at 7-8-2, while WVWC drops to 3-11-3. Frostburg now awaits the result of the Davis & Elkins – WV Wesleyan match on Wednesday, November 5 to determine their MEC Tournament seeding. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
