Men's Cross Country 2023 Season Preview
FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State Athletics will be taking a preview of each team competing in the fall season, covering eight total sports. With two more teams to cover, both will be broken down into their expectations, key players, and overall outlook for their season and program. To start the final week will be Men's Cross Country.
Overall
Frostburg State Men's Cross Country will run their 54th season this Fall in their 2023 season. Head Coach Shane Brookshire enters his fifth season with the team.
Last Season
The Bobcats finished seventh in the MEC Championships last season, coming in behind MEC rival Fairmont State. FSU had two team top-five finishes last year, coming in third out of nine teams in the Piper Alumni XC Challenge, and coming in fifth out of nine teams in the Bethany Invite. Kaleb Berhanu put up a third place finish in the team's first meet of the year, the Piper Alumni XC Challenge, running a 19:54. Brookshire helped lead Justus LePrevost to his second straight All-MEC Second Team honor, having finished 11th in the MEC Championships with a time of 27:13.73, the fastest FSU time on the course. It also was the first time that the Bobcats qualified for the Division II Atlantic Regional Championships.
The Returners
FSU welcomes back six out of their eight runners from 2022, in senior LePrevost, juniors Caden Jones and Elijah Ennis, and sophomores Berhanu, Justin Dowell, and Brandon Stein, all who ran in four or more meets last season. Along with his record breaking performance, LePrevost also set the fastest Frostburg time in the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships with 30.38.4. Jones set a personal best in the Lock Haven XC Invite with a time of 31:37.00, while Berhanu knotted his best 8k time in the Go Fast River Run with a 25:40 finish.
The Newcomers
Brookshire looks to add 12 new faces to his squad this fall, with nine freshmen and three transfers. Juniors Austin Comeaux, Logan Folmer, and Eric Hutchison all join FSU coming from Harford Community College, while freshmen runners will be Matthew Brennan, Ryan Connelly, Ray Gibson, Nathan Hillhouse, Jack Hynes, Jaxon Jones, Gage Osborne, Isayah Stewart, and Haben Tesfay.
Kick off to the Season
Frostburg starts their season on Friday, September 1 as they travel to Shippensburg, PA to compete in the Galen Piper XC Invite. The team will compete in three other meets in the regular season, the Bethany XC Invite, LHU XC Invite, and Paul Short Run, all before the MEC Championships in October.
