Open Pyramid Earns Highest Heat Score of Season in A&T's Loss to #10 Saints
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Acrobatics & Tumbling team lost at home to No. 10 Limestone 252.135-238.295 on Thursday evening.
Starting out in the Compulsory event, the sides were evenly matched through, with FSU taking two events to the Saints' one, while tying in the toss with each team's highest score of 9.45. LU took the Pyramid heat 9.25-9.05, while the Bobcats won the Acro (8.5-8.4) and Tumbling (6.55-6.25) heats to take a slight edge in the event 33.55-33.35. In a back-and-forth battle through the Acro event, Limestone came out ahead 27.30-27.05, winning both the 5- and 7-Element heats. Frostburg took the 6-Element 8.75-8.40, as each team's highest score came in the 7-Element at 9.5-9.4.
The Saints continued their momentum into the Pyramid event, which they again won in a close contest. LU narrowly won the Inversion heat 9.35-9.3 before a more convincing win in the Synchronized heat (9.4-8.9), while each impressed in the Open heat at a 9.8 tie, FSU's highest score in a heat this season. At the half, Limestone held a close lead at 89.2-88.6. Beginning the second half in the Toss, LU took each of the first two heats, including an event-best 9.25 in the 450 Salto, but the Bobcats recovered to win the open toss 8.65-8.05. The Saints' early advantage was still just enough to win the event, albeit with another close score of 25.85-25.75.
It took until the Tumbling event for Limestone to widen the gap by more than a point, as they used higher starting values throughout the duo pass and individual passes to win 51.725-49.325. The visitors impressed in the Aerial (9.775) and Open (9.6) passes, while Frostburg's highest score was secured by senior Nia Ivanov's 9.425 out of a possible 9.75 in the Open pass. Two other heats were won by FSU in the trio (7.95-7.85) and quad (7.35-7.05) passes, as they had a better score differential but didn't have the total points.
As things came down to the Team event with LU holding close to a three-point lead, they put any doubts away with a strong 85.36 during their routine. The Bobcats put up a 74.62 in their chance on the floor, scoring a season-best 238.295 but coming short of the Saints' 252.135.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 3-2 on the year, while Limestone improves to 6-0. FSU returns to Bobcat Arena on Friday, March 14 to face No. 14 Long Island at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
