Badolato, Haney Power Women's Lacrosse to Undefeated MEC Season
ELKINS, W.V. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team defeated Davis & Elkins on Saturday afternoon by a score of 26-7 in their regular season finale.
After a groundball scooped was up by junior goalkeeper Nicole Gray, FSU had a successful clear, which resulted in junior Julia Badolato scoring the first goal of the game. D&E answered back with a free position goal, then after three minutes of scoreless play, Frostburg caused a turnover, seeing the ball in graduate Lilly Stephens' stick, feeding Badolato for another score 2-1. Just before the quarter ended Badolato had a hat trick on a man-up goal with a 3-1 lead.
The Senators immediately scored to start the second to get within one at 3-2. The Bobcats quickly hit back, gaining a four-lead advantage, with sophomores Jessie Bare and Nelia Haney combining for three goals within a minute, the latter recording her 150th career point in the process. D&E wasn't deterred, as they scored a goal either side of a Haney tally to keep it a three-goal game 7-4. At the five-minute mark, Badolato put another in the back of the net for an 8-4 edge. D&E had the ball but was unsuccessful on the clear, allowing sophomore Emily Lamoreaux to put in FSU's ninth goal. Haney once again exchanged goals with the Senators, as the Bobcats held a 10-5 advantage going into halftime.
Thanks to some defensive dominance, Frostburg served the only goals in the third quarter, going on a nine-score run. Within the first six minutes, junior Brittyn Leonard scored either side of a Lamoreaux goal, then senior Camden DeMaio provided assists to both Haney and Badolato to put FSU in control 15-5. Brittyn assisted sophomore Sydney Stone before scoring herself a minute later for a 12-goal lead, as DeMaio and Badolato ended the period with goals for a 19-5 lead.
Badolato, Lenoard and Haney each put another in the back of the next to kick off the fourth quarter up 22-5. Under the ten-minute mark, graduate Maura O'Neill saw her first of the day for an 18-goal lead at 23-5. D&E stopped their drought with a goal, which was instantly answered by another from Haney at 24-6. Haney put up the last two Bobcat goals of the game alongside another from the Senators, as FSU took the game 26-7.
Haney led with eight goals followed by Badolato with seven, Leonard with four, DeMaio and Lamoreaux each with two and O'Neill and Stone both with one. Haney and DeMaio tied with four assists, while Bare caused three turnovers and junior Delaney Devers was right behind with two.
With the win, Frostburg moves to an overall record of 11-5 and a conference record of 8-0 while D&E falls to an overall record of 12-6 and a conference record of 3-5. It is the first time in program history that the program has finished a conference season with an unbeaten record. The Bobcats are back in action on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 pm as they host West Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals of the MEC Tournament. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
