Women's Track & Field 2025 Season Preview
FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State Athletics will be taking a preview of each team competing in the spring season, covering nine total sports. All teams will be broken down into their matchups, key players, and overall outlook for their season and program. To conclude spring sports is Women's Track & Field.
Overall
Frostburg State Women's Track & Field prepares for their outdoor season this spring, entering the session after placing eighth overall in the MEC Indoor Championships in February. John Kerns and Ballard Suiter will lead the program, coming back to the staff for their fifth straight year, as they are joined by Nate Mesy and Baby Jimerson who will serve as the graduate assistants.
Last Season
FSU had a successful go-around in the 2024 outdoor season, competing in six meets before the MEC Outdoor Championships and two Last Chance Meets. Before the conference championships, the Bobcats hosted their second straight Bob Lewis Classic, prior to putting up a second-place finish in the Messiah Multis Invite out of 16 teams, while then taking fifth place out of another 19 teams at the Hopkins-Loyola Invite. In the MEC's, Frostburg finished third out of nine teams, their best finish since joining the Mountain East Conference, scoring a new team-high of 118 points. To start off the top-finishes for Frostburg was Eva Morrison who earned a first place finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.45m on the first day, followed by Jasmine Scott taking the 400-meters with a run of 56.27. The 4x100 (47.46) and 4x400 (3:59.29) relay teams of Malaika Habib, Valerie Boards, and Bella Mastria, and Lilly Williams won both their events, rounding out the first-place finishes for Frostburg. FSU had multiple top-three placements throughout the entire meet, with Mastria placing second in the 400m (56.84) right behind Scott and going for third in the long jump (5.72m). Boards received third in the 200 meters (25.02), while Khady Ndiaye saw third in the high jump (1.50m), and Morgan Mathews took third in the heptathlon (3,773). The Bobcats had over a dozen all-time performances during the outdoor season, with Boards setting the new program record in the 200 meters with a sprint of 24.67. The 4x100 relay team at MEC's showed the third best finish in program history with 47.46, while Mathews' 3,773 points at the championships captured fourth all-time. Scott (56.27) and Mastria's (56.84) 400m times in MEC's sat them at third and fourth all-time to finish out the all-time records for the Bobcats at the championships.
Frostburg had a busy indoor season, competing in six total meets before the conference indoor championships. In the MEC's, FSU's top mark came in the 4x400m relay, where the team of Mastria, Lucy Crowe, Boards, and Erin Colling ran a 4:00.20 for the third-fastest time in program history, earning them All-MEC Honorable Mention in the event. Throughout the indoor season, Mastria continued her impressive career as just a sophomore, setting the new all-time record in the indoor long jump with a leap of 5.54m. Crowe was another Bobcat to make her way into the top-10 list of the event, showing a jump of 5.28m earlier in the season for a seventh best slot. To conclude the indoor season, Mastria made top-10 program in the 60m hurdles (9.78) and pentathlon (2,778) going for ninth and fifth best, while Reghan Sivic currently sits in eighth in the pentathlon with 1,860 points. Sydney Johnson made her name quickly known in the throwing events, showing a 13.10m weight throw for eighth best all-time.
The Returners
Kerns and Suiter welcome back 15 returners from last years squad, as Erin Haviland, Amy Tarcza, Chelsea Montau, and Tia Moye will represent the graduating class and round out their Bobcat careers in the multis and distance events. Boards and Ndiaye both return for their junior year, looking to continue their dominant success in the program so far, as well as Claire Breighner. Crowe and Mastria come back for their second season, alongside fellow sophomores Paige Etnoyer, Emily Wishart, Hannah Schauman, Raegan Phillips, Maria Hiles, and Jazmine Pinon, who all range from distance, to sprints, to jumps, to throws.
The Newcomers
Frostburg adds in a solid mix of newcomers to the team, welcoming in 11 freshman, two new additions, and one transfer. Junior Lindsay Aldridge and sophomore Jocelyn Cacek join the team for their first year, both showing for the throws area, while sophomore Clare Woodring transferred in from Hagerstown Community College and will represent distance. Gwen Bates and Collins have already made a name for themselves in the freshman class of sprinters, while Sivic looks to continue her success from indoor in the jumps/multis. Kenlee Hayes, Keira Taylor, and Reilly Teague look to show for the distance runners, while Johnson, alongside, Eden Smallwood, Kenndey Simmings, Sarah Heasley, and Nia Bowman look to make their mark in throws.
Kickoff to Season
The Bobcats opened their 2025 outdoor season Friday, March 21 in the Mary Pushkin Invitational in Morgantown, WV. The team went on to show in meets at both NC State and West Liberty the weekend prior, Thursday, March 27 through Saturday, March 29. FSU will now compete in meets at Messiah and John Hopkins, before preparing for the MEC Outdoor Championships that look to start on Sunday, April 27 at Mylan Park, also located in Morgantown, WV.
