Quick Second Half Goal Gives #24 Huskies Win Over Men's Soccer
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team dropped a narrow 1-0 decision to No. 24 Bloomsburg on the road Saturday night.
BU held the upper hand early on and had a great opportunity to take the lead when Sam Blumberger found himself with space at the top of the box, but he blazed his shot over the bar. FSU was able to settle in and produced their first chance 15 minutes in, where sophomore Dom Good had a bounced effort from distance gathered by Husky keeper Peter Punchello.
The Bobcats would command the majority of chances throughout the half, as six minutes later, junior Anthony Diaz latched onto a loose ball and fired high and wide. Sophomore Mason Salvadge was then played through with a long ball over the top, but he couldn't generate enough power on his left foot to trouble Punchello. Freshman Frank Stare had possibly Frostburg's best chance of the half, getting on the end of a bouncing ball in the box but shot straight at Punchello to parry away.
Diaz then had another effort from distance that Punchello was able to dive to his right and get both hands on 10 minutes from the half. Bloomsburg would have the final chance of the period, however it was a wild effort nowhere near sophomore Jan Foret's goal, as the sides went into the break without a score.
Just a minute into the second half, BU launched a throw into the box that was flicked to the back post, where somehow Foret was able to throw himself in front of the shot, while senior Jason Guevara made a goal-line clearance. The Huskies continued with that momentum, needing less than a minute for Blumberger to cross to the top of the box for a ball met by Theo Jackson curled inside the right-hand post for a 1-0 lead.
Frostburg then gave away a free kick that was floated to the back post and met by a Husky head, but it fell comfortably into Foret's arms. After 15 minutes with a lack of chances, Good came closest for the Bobcats with a curling effort 25 yards out that went just wide of the post.
Neither side was able to generate much the rest of the half, as FSU put bodies forward while Bloomsburg tried to make use of counterattacks, putting a trio of shots wide and high. Frostburg had a pair of late corners but couldn't threaten Punchello's goal, as BU came away with the one-goal win.
The Huskies held a slight 8-7 advantage in shots, though FSU put four on goal compared to the hosts' three.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 2-2-1 on the year, while Bloomsburg improves to 3-0-2. FSU returns to Mountain East Conference play on Wednesday, September 24 as they come back to Bobcat Stadium to face Davis & Elkins at 7:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
