Men's Soccer Takes Season Opener against Cal (Pa.)
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated California University of Pennsylvania in their season opener on Thursday evening with a final score of 4-0.
The evening matchup between the Bobcats and the Vulcans saw each team searching for an edge through the first 10 minutes of the game. After multiple shots on goal by FSU, sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas found the back of the net 10 minutes in, after a through ball was played by junior Abdur-Rahman Neama, for Frostburg's first goal of the season and an early 1-0 lead.
Frostburg kept the ball in the Vulcans defensive half for the next fifteen minutes, before Rivas found the ball at his feet once again. Rivas would earn his second goal of the game beating Cal's defender and placing one in the low left corner of the goal with 18 minutes left in the first half. Graduate Joel Assal put up two saves in the first 45 minutes, allowing the Bobcats to lead 2-0 at the break.
FSU saw two shots on goal in the first minute of the second half, as the next twenty minutes consisted of back and forth play. Freshman Hugo Portillo broke the ice, sending a through ball to graduate Alex Flores, who sent the ball past the Vulcans goalie and into the low left corner of the net, for a 3-0 Bobcat lead with 14 minutes left to play.
With just over 30 seconds left in the game, FSU sealed the deal adding to their lead, as senior Scott Fernandez fed Portillo a perfect cross, for a 4-0 game and the Bobcats first win of the season. Assal recorded two more saves for a total of four in his first shutout of the season.
With the win, the Bobcats move to 1-0, while California (Pa.) falls to 0-1. Frostburg remains at home, as they host West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, September 3 at 1 PM to open MEC play. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
