Pioneers Defeat Volleyball on Senior Night

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team fell on senior night to Glenville State, as the Pioneers won in four sets to take down the Bobcats.

Frostburg started the night off by honoring the seniors from each team, from which FSU had a senior class of six in Faith Stevenson, Phoebe Lingold, Brenna Siperko, Ada Kuday, Amanda Knieper, and Chloe Del Signore.

The Bobcats started strong, going up 6–1 early thanks to kills by sophomore Devin Brunk and graduate Madison Reed, while Siperko and sophomore Dani Kunkle put up a pair of combo blocks. After a Glenville timeout, the visitors swiftly responded with six in a row to lead 7–6. FSU netted four of the next five with Kunkle putting down a pair of kills before joining junior Paige Mock on a block, who then found the floor herself to go up 10-8. The Pioneers then went on a 5-1 run to lead by two, an advantage that they held up to an 18-16 score. GSU took control of the set from that point, scoring five of six to lead 23-17 following an ace. FSU fought off two set points from a pair of errors before Glenville took the win 25–20.

In similar fashion to the first, Frostburg got out to a quick lead, as Brunk, Kunkle, and Mock combined for four kills while the latter added a service ace to go up 7–2. Junior Grace Yocham entered the match and provided a spark, netting a pair of kills while joining freshman Adele Evans on a block before Kunkle's ace put the lead at 14-6. GSU tried to pull themselves back into the set by getting within 15-11, but a Yocham kill followed by sophomore Emery Kuebler's serve for an ace made the lead 17–11. Glenville used back-to-back kills to get the score to 19-15 before FSU sprinted away, as Evans netted five total points down the stretch on three kills and a pair of blocks with Yocham and Kunkle to take the 25-16 victory.

With the match evened up on sets, the teams played their most balanced start so far, as the score stood at 7-7 to begin the third. The Pioneers rattled off three straight kills by Cali Queen to burst ahead, but FSU responded through Mock and Brunk scores and the former combining with junior Maya Johnson on a block to pull level at 11-11. As they had done in the first, Glenville took full momentum with nine of the next eleven points for a 20-13 advantage. Frostburg ended the run with kills from Kunkle and Evans, however GSU put down the next four, including a pair of aces, to reach eight set points. A serving error was followed by a Brunk kill and Knieper ace, however the Pioneer advantage held with a 25–19 set win.

Set four was tied seven times before either team reached 10 points, as Frostburg turned a 9-7 deficit into a 10-9 lead after Evans and Mock recorded kills and the latter joined freshman Nevaeh Ware on a block. The Pioneers then started another run run, taking five of six points to go up 14–11. The Bobcats would attempt to fight their way back, as back-to-back scores from Johnson and Kunkle pulled the hosts within one at 16–15. GSU restored their advantage with five of the next six, leading 21-16 and looking to put the match away. Evans and Ware put down kills while Knieper served another ace to make it 21–18, but the Pioneers took three of four to get to five match points. Brunk had FSU's final kill before Mikayla Curry gave Glenville the match and the set 25–20.

Kunkle led FSU in kills with 12 and tied sophomore Allison Brown with eight digs. Kuebler and Lingold both had 17 assists, while Mock, Kunkle, and Evans combined for 16 blocks.

With the loss, the Bobcats now stand at 9–13 overall while Glenville moves to 12–14. Frostburg will travel to Wheeling on Tuesday, November 4, for a 7 p.m. start. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com
