Second Half Women's Rugby Comeback Falls Short in Loss to West Chester

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's rugby team fell to West Chester at home by a 30-20 final.

Neither side was able to generate much offense until 15 minutes into play, where senior Liberty Cawthorn dished a quick pass to junior LJ Jordan for the first try of the game and a 5-0 FSU lead. West Chester would respond after just over seven minutes to even things up at 5-5. Momentum would stay on the Golden Rams side with a second straight try and conversion to make it a 12-5 game. The Bobcats would threaten several times, getting just outside the try zone but failing to get in, leaving the deficit at seven.

Four minutes into the second half, WCU was able to convert a penalty kick, giving them a two-possession lead at 15-5. Frostburg needed less than three minutes to respond, as Jordan made a great fake pass before juking a defender to net her second try of the game and get to within 15-10. The Golden Rams would score next, adding a penalty try to make the score 22-10 with 25 minutes to play.

FSU produced another quick response, as sophomore Scout Spadoni would run through several West Chester defenders on her way to a try and 22-15 score. After a scrum just outside the zone, Spadoni again bullied her way for her second try to bring the Bobcats within 22-20. WCU was able to stop a pair of Frostburg attacks before being awarded another penalty kick that was put through with 10 minutes to go for a 25-20 advantage. FSU wouldn't be able to take their opportunities with the ball late on, as the Golden Rams had one more try with two minutes to go to make the final 30-20.

With the loss Frostburg is now 3-4 overall, while West Chester improves to 4-3. The Bobcats with host their last regular season match on Saturday, November 1 at 1 PM for senior day against Navy. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
