Women's Wrestling Hosts Second Annual Bobcat Open, Sees Six Placers
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team hosted their second annual Bobcat Open on Saturday, welcoming in around 150 wrestlers to competition in Bobcat Arena. In just their second year as a program, Frostburg had six wrestlers place.
Freshman Faith Day took seventh place in the 103 lb weight class, winning her first match by pinfall in 1:51, before earning two more pinfalls on the day in times of 2:43 and 48 seconds. Fellow freshman Charvi Bethu went on to place fifth in 103, picking up a fall, and receiving two more wins with a bye and a forfeit.
Freshman Elle Webster finished sixth in 110, coming out on top in her first two matches by pinfall (1:56) and decision (2-1), but falling in the fifth place match by tech fall. Junior Solana Mottola had a successful outing in the 131 lb weight class, cruising through her first three matches all by pinfall, two which were in under a minute. Mottola took her consolation semifinal match with a 10-3 decision, putting her in the third place contest, where she finished fourth.
Sophomore Brianna Holcomb (131) and senior Shani Tyson (138) picked up a handful of points on the day, with the former earning three wins by pinfall and tech fall, and the latter picking up a pinfall in 1:19. Showing up in 180 was junior Jada Arnold, competing for her first time in Bobcat Arena, where she took fourth place. Arnold showed victories in her first two matches, one by pinfall and the other by decision, before earning a decision to send her to the third place match.
Sophomore Jocelyn Cacek ended the day with a trip to the championship match of 207, earning herself two huge pinfalls in her first two looks at competition. Cacek pinned her first opponent in 2:53, before coming back in her semifinal match for a last second pin at the six-minute mark. Cacek fell by decision in the first place contest, giving her second in the bracket.
After the success of the Bobcat Open, Frostburg looks ahead to the NCWWC Regional Tournament in Tiffin, Ohio set for Saturday, February 22. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
