Volleyball Sets Season-High Hitting Percentage in Home Sweep of Tigers
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team closed out their home season with a 3-0 sweep of Salem (WV) on Friday evening.
SU began the match with a kill, with sophomore Devin Brunk responding with one of her own before putting up an ace to get the Bobcats going. The Tigers went narrowly ahead 4-3 before four straight from FSU gave them a three-point advantage, with freshman Adele Evans and sophomore Dani Kunkle finding the floor and combining on a block, while junior Maya Johnson had an ace in the run. Salem battled back to get within 9-8 before junior Paige Mock and Johnson went for back-to-back kills and then stuffed an SU attack to lead 12-8. The Tigers wouldn't get within more than two points the rest of the way, as a trio of kills between Kunkle and Evans stretched the lead to 18-13. Frostburg then used a 6-1 run to effectively put the set away, as junior Grace Yocham joined Mock on a pair of blocks while the latter netted the set-winning kill at 25-18.
FSU took all of their momentum into the start of the second set, taking six of the first seven points, beginning with Mock finding the floor while Brunk netted three kills and sophomore Emery Kuebler notched an ace. Back-to-back kills by Johnson and Kunkle put the Bobcats up by five, however a kill and two straight aces brought Salem back within 8-6. Frostburg looked to get rolling again through another Kunkle score and a pair of Johnson aces, but the Tigers responded with five of the next six to bring the deficit down to 12-11. FSU then was able to capitalize on a pair of SU errors, as senior Amanda Knieper netted an ace while freshman Nevaeh Ware joined Mock on a block before spiking one down for a 17-11 lead. Salem wouldn't get the score closer than four, as Kunkle had kills either side of a Mock ace to end the set on a 5-1 run and a 25-17 victory.
Frostburg again started swiftly in the third, as Brunk and Mock put down the first three points and the former added an ace to begin up 5-0. The Tigers rolled off the next four to get within one but the Bobcats hit right back with seven of the next nine, as Kunkle took full command of the offense, powering down five kills for a 12-6 advantage. Ware then kept the attack ticking with back-to-back scores, followed by Kunkle, Yocham, and Mock as the lead ballooned to 20-9. SU wouldn't go down without a fight, however, as they had a pair of four-point runs while holding FSU in check, using an ace to pull within 22-18. Ware helped stop the late run before Evans slammed a ball through the middle that brought up five match points, with a Tiger error ending things at 25-19.
Kunkle led all scorers with 15 kills, as Mock joined her in double figures with 10 of her own, also tallying a match-high five blocks. Sophomore Allison Brown led the defensive effort with 17 digs, followed closely by Brunk's 14, as the latter tied with Johnson at three aces apiece. Kuebler and freshman Pia White combined for 37 assists, the latter setting a new career-high with 10. As a team, FSU hit .321, their highest percentage in a match since October of 2024.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 10-14 on the year, while Salem drops to 11-13. The Bobcats next travel to West Liberty on Tuesday, November 11 for a 7 p.m. match. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
