Holcomb, Tyson Earn Places for Women's Wrestling at Midlands Championships
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team competed at the Ken Kraft Midlands Tournament on Monday, placing ninth out of thirteen total teams in the competition.
Sophomore Brianna Holcomb and senior Shani Tyson each led the team in scoring with a combined 22 of FSU's 29 points, with both earning sixth-place finishes. Holcomb took down her first two opponents in the 131 lb. class by pinfall and a 10-5 decision before losing in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket. She then picked up an 8-0 decision and another pin in the consolation bracket but just missed out on a spot in the third-place match and fell in the battle for fifth.
Tyson also secured a spot in the quarterfinals with a 10-0 tech fall but lost to the eventual 138 lb. runner-up. She recovered to pick up another 10-0 tech fall win to set up an all-Frostburg matchup with junior Solana Mottola, which was a 5-0 decision before suffering the same fate as Holcomb in the fifth-place match. Mottola had advanced in the main bracket with an 11-6 decision before a pinfall defeat, which she quickly turned around in her first consolation match with a pin of her own before facing Tyson.
The Bobcats earned a few victories in the 207 lb. bracket, as sophomore Jocelyn Cacek picked up a pair of pinfalls while freshman Lorelei Hartman earned a 10-0 tech fall in a consolation round. At 110 lbs., freshman Elle Webster had a second-round pin to advance in the consolation bracket before suffering a narrow 3-2 decision loss, while at 138 lbs., freshman Amber Hunter-Snyder picked up the final victory with an 8-6 decision in the consolation round.
Frostburg will next return to Bobcat Arena on Wednesday, January 15 to face McDaniel at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
