Allen's Brace, Sterne's Clean Sheet Leads Women's Soccer to Senior Day Win

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team celebrated their regular season home finale with a 3-0 victory over West Liberty on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the contest, FSU honored its senior class In Katie Sterne, Mackenzie Alonso, Mei Homman, Carolyn DeSena, Madi Allen, and Cat Smith, as well as junior Hannah Lebo, as all are rounding out their Bobcat careers.

Within the opening minutes, Frostburg took control of possession, as junior Morgan Mrizek had a couple of chances both stopped by keeper Cianna Butera, while Alonso, DeSena, and Allen all had shots that went off target. WLU had their first sight at goal just over 15 minutes in, earning a corner kick that was curled toward goal and tipped away by Sterne.

Five minutes later, Smith had a crack at goal, firing from distance on her left foot and being parried away by Butera. FSU finally got their breakthrough after the half hour mark, as freshman Cassidy Paige received the ball in her own half and carried it past midfield, feeding a perfect through ball for Allen to run onto, curling the ball around Butera and off the inside of the post for a 1-0 advantage.

In the final 15 of the half, the Bobcats fired off another nine shots, as Butera made six saves. The best of the chances came when Paige drew a diving stop, with the rebound falling right to sophomore Grace Sarver, but under pressure she could only put the ball wide of net.

It took just two minutes for Frostburg to double their lead to begin the second period, as a ball over the top from freshman Ana Davis found DeSena, crossing to the back post and onto the head of Allen to put into an open net. Over the next 10 minutes, FSU had seven shots, as Butera made another four saves, with Alonso having a fierce shot clip the outside of the post and Homman putting a well-struck shot off the crossbar.

Neither side could fashion many chances until the final five minutes, as Butera made a couple of catches on shots from distance off efforts from Homman and freshman Rayiah Davis. Sterne produced another fine moment as the match entered the final moments, making a fingertip save on a drive from distance by Mia Zecca. At the other end, freshman Elena Fernandez made a surging run down the right wing, cutting into the box and getting away a shot that was turned away by Butera. Fernandez would have the last laugh, however, as with just under a minute to go, a corner kick floated in by junior Hannah Clagett was met by the former at the center of the box and put home for the 3-0 final.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 13-2-2 on the year, while West Liberty drops to 5-10-2. The victory secures the Bobats' fourth straight MEC North Division Championship, as they will play their regular season finale on the road against Fairmont State on Wednesday, November 6 at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
