Men's Lacrosse Works for Senior Day Win Over RWU to Finish Out Regular Season
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team slotted themselves into the three-seed of the ECC Tournament with a 13-7 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Senior Day during the team's regular season finale.
Prior to the game, Frostburg recognized their 15 seniors for rounding out their career in a Bobcat uniform, including Drew Mullineaux, Landon Bruce, Seamus Kearney, Connor Covey, Logan Covey, Emanuel Jackson, Gregg Dort, Alex Walstrum, Tristan Anderson, Nate Jones, Ben Smith, Wesley Phillips, Blaine Karotko, Riley Semmes, and Christian Quesada.
Frostburg looked to build an advantage right away, taking the opening face-off and setting up Phillips for a try but his attempt was blocked. Roberts Wesleyan took the ball down in response and tried to send one in right away as well, hitting the post on their first look. L. Covey collected his first save of the game on RWU's next shot a goal, setting up FSU's offense on the other end as senior Tyrin Long fed sophomore Luke Roach for a 1-0 Bobcat lead almost four minutes in. Dort tried to expand Frostburg's lead off the next face-off, sprinting down and sending one over the goal. Both teams swapped a turnover in the next minute, before sophomore Luke Aspnes slotted one home for a 2-0 game. The Bobcats continued to work, with Walstrum winning the next face-off and Kearney scooping up a ground ball, as the Redhawks sprinted through to get on the board around the one-minute mark for a 2-1 contest. Roach's next attempt was wide, as junior John Serina and junior Sean Mullineaux's looks both missed. L. Covey tallied a trio of saves before the quarter ended, as Serina got one to go in the final seconds for a 3-1 FSU advantage after one.
The Redhawks ripped the first shot of the second quarter, aiming their first attempt off target, as both teams swapped turnovers to begin action. Roach and S. Mullineaux tried to begin the offense for the Bobcats in the first few minutes, each sending in a shot that was unable to find the back of the net. With just over four minutes into the quarter, Roberts Wesleyan turned the ball over in Frostburg's offensive half, giving Roach a clean shot at goal to bump the score to 4-1. Kearney continued to work on the defensive end for FSU, earning himself a CT as L. Covey continued to keep the Redhawks scoreless in the quarter. After Serina and junior Graham Allison both sent in shots at goal, Long was able to send one in that caught the top of the net for a 5-1 game around the midway mark. L. Covey racked up a pair of saves in goal as time went on, with Roach's next look being blocked. With 1:39 left in the half, RWU was able to get one by to leave the score at 5-2 heading into the break.
The Bobcats extended their lead right away to begin the third, with Frostburg keeping possession off a strike from sophomore Henry Sykes that allowed fellow sophomore JT Calhoun to put one in to push the score to 6-2. FSU continued their offensive pressure with both freshman Jack Laye and Aspnes trying to add to the Bobcats' total as both were unable to do so in the next minute. Frostburg's defense coughed up another turnover from Roberts Wesleyan, along with blocking the next shot from the Redhawks. RWU sent in a duo of shots, both that soared off target with Jones now in goal, all before Aspnes dished to Sykes for his first tally of the day to put the score at 7-2. Roberts Wesleyan was able to respond, sneaking one by off the next face-off. Walstrum then answered with the same play, winning the competition in the X and sprinting down for an immediate strike to put the game back at a five-goal differential with a 8-3 score. FSU continued to try and pour the offensive pressure on RWU's defense, firing away a trio of shots compared to the Redhawks' one. Around three minutes later, Roberts Wesleyan cut the score in half, before Sykes answered before the end of the quarter off a feed from Phillips for a 9-4 score going into the fourth.
Kearney sent in the first shot of the fourth, looking to knot one on senior day but his shot went just high. RWU was able to get their first look of the quarter to go, as FSU's next two tries were all collected by the goalie. With almost five minutes gone in the quarter, Sykes repaid Phillips, setting up the latter for a strike to set the game at 10-5. S. Mullineaux kept that energy going off the next face-off, swinging around for another Bobcat goal not even a minute later. Aspnes sent in the next attempt for Frostburg, before Roberts Wesleyan added another to their total to get the game to 11-6. Aspnes was given another chance at goal off the face-off once more, where Roach set him up for a 12-6 score. Almost a minute later, Roach tallied FSU's final goal of the game off an assist from Serina, as RWU got one more to go as well to leave the final score at 13-7.
Roach led all scorers on the day with a hat-trick and an assist for four total points, while Sykes and Aspnes were next with a pair of goals and an assist each. Walstrum and Phillips led the team in ground balls with six each, with the former going 8-for-10 in the X and Dort seeing 9-for-13. Kearney finished with a team-high four caused turnovers to go with four ground balls as well. Covey made a team-high eight saves in goal.
With the win, Frostburg finishes the regular season 7-8, while Roberts Wesleyan goes 6-7. The Bobcats head into the ECC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, where they will face the No. 2 seed Molloy on Wednesday, April 30 in Rockville Centre, NY with game time to be announced.
