Mwehu, Konopka, Holcomb Go Unbeaten for Women's Wrestling at Adrian Duals
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Frostburg State women's wrestling team went 2-1 at the Adrian Duals on Saturday, defeating Delaware State and Albion while falling to Sacred Heart.
The Bobcats opened against Sacred Heart in its first dual of the year, as after a forfeit at 103, freshman Kenaya Mwehu got FSU on the board with a win by fall at 110. SHU then took a decision and a tech fall before junior Brianna Holcomb and freshman Isabelle Konopka responded with a pair of pins at 131 and 138, respectively, giving the Bobcats a 17-12 lead in the match. Sacred Heart would take the final four bouts, however, including a pair by pinfall, to win 29-18.
The second dual came against Delaware State, with the first bout being contested at 117, which was won by DSU. The Hornets then also took the 124 match before a pair of forfeits allowed Frostburg to take a 15-14 lead. After a Del State pin at 145, freshman Naria Medrano needed just 46 seconds to respond at 160. With a one-point lead, freshman Chaniah Bernier then won on a 13-5 decision at 180 before junior Maria Hiles closed things out with a fall in the 207 match for the 28-20 final.
The final dual of the day came against Albion, as FSU would save its best for last, winning all but one match. Mwehu got things started with a 10-0 tech fall before a Briton forfeit and a pin by freshman Ella McDonald put the Bobcats ahead 14-0. AC got their first points on a pin at 141, however that would be their only bright spot. Konopka rolled to a tech fall and was matched by freshman Reise Roach. Bernier and Hiles polished off Frostburg's dominance with a pair of pins at 180 and 207, respectively, for the 37-5 final.
After the duals, FSU now stands at 2-1 as a team early in the season. The Bobcats wrestle again tomorrow, November 9 for the Adrian Open beginning at 11 a.m.. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
