Women's Wrestling 2024-25 Season Preview
FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State Athletics will be taking a preview for each team competing in the Winter season, covering six total sports. Throughout the next week, each team will be broken down into their expectations, key players, and overall outlook for their season and program. To continue winter sports is Women's Wrestling.
Overall
Frostburg Women's Wrestling is set to embark on their second season in program history, with Head Coach Bre Neal returning to lead the team, while also welcoming back Assistant Coach Caitlin Cardenas.
Last Season
FSU had a memorable season in their first year, picking up two individual wins for an overall 2-10 record, while competing in four open meets as well. The Bobcats secured their first-ever victory with a 25-15 score over Marymount, while then defeating Greensboro College by a close match of 16-15. Frostburg had six Bobcats earn at least one individual victory on the year, while four picked up six or more. Jada Fowler, Lillia Costilla, and Aurora Walters represented FSU at the National Women's Wrestling Regional Tournament, where Costilla and Fowler took third and fourth place to move on to the National Tournament in Iowa. In the classroom, Fowler was named a NWCA Scholar All-American, the first-ever in program history.
The Returners
Neal returns almost her entire inaugural roster, welcoming back seven strong athletes from last year. Costilla and Fowler rejoin the team as sophomores after a historic freshman year, along with Walters, Maria Hiles, and Jocelyn Cacek, with Cacek looking for her first time on the mat as a Bobcat after an early injury last season. Samira Stephens and Sarah Sunday came to Frostburg as transfers a season ago, as they prepare to represent the junior class this upcoming season. During the preseason, Fowler, Walters, and Hiles were all ranked second in their respective weight classes in the NWCA Region 4 Individual Rankings, with Fowler then being ranked 10th in the NWCA NCAA Preseason National Rankings as well.
The Newcomers
Neal looks to build and expand the program in the team's second-ever season, bringing in 14 newcomers to the squad. Neal is set with a freshman class of 10, welcoming Jenna Baines, Charvi Bethu, Trinity Butler, Faith Day, Lorelei Hartman, Amber Hunter-Snyder, Shaylee Mokshefski, Elena Saucedo, Nadia Ungurean, and Elle Webster to the mat. Neal then adds four solid transfers to the mix, all who come in with collegiate wrestling experience, with Brianna Holcomb coming in as a sophomore from Southern Maryland, Solana Mottola joining as a junior from McKendree, and Angelina Adams and Shani Tyson looking to finish out their careers as seniors coming from Oklahoma City and Life University. Mottola was ranked second in her weight class in the NWCA Region 4 Preseason Individual Rankings, while Tyson and Adams were ranked fourth, both in their respective weight classes.
