Millersville Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Women's Basketball
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's basketball team lost to Millersville at home in a midweek regional matchup by an 81-59 final.
MU started strong, scoring the first three baskets of the game while holding FSU scoreless for the opening two and a half minutes. Redshirt freshman Sophie Nichols and freshman Zaria Gaskins settled things down, hitting back-to-back threes for the Bobcats to tie things at 6-6. Millersville then ran off 10 straight before a combined four free throws from sophomore Julie Spinelli, junior Jenna Muha, and redshirt sophomore Mandy Roman made the score 16-10. After a two-minute scoring drought, the Marauders got to the line for a make, while redshirt sophomoer Riley Nelson answered with a steal and fed sophomore Laekyn Flinn for an easy bucket to pull within five. Within the final minute, MU took advantage of a turnover and a missed three, hitting two from deep to make the score 23-12 after one.
The second quarter started with Millersville still controlling the momentum, scoring on their first three offensive trips to move ahead 29-14. Frostburg used good foul shooting to stay alive, as Muha went four-of-four but couldn't make a dent into the 15-point Marauder advantage. Inside the final five minutes, the Bobcats locked down defensively, holding MU without another point for the rest of the half. Spinelli would knock down a pair of foul shots to kick off the run, while Finn made back-to-back buckets to get within single digits. Nichols then also was perfect at the stripe, while freshman Zaria Gaskins dished to classmate Ella Sabatos for an easy layup before hitting a three to pull within two. Spinelli had a steal followed by a defensive rebound to keep the ball away from the visitors before hitting two more freebies go into the half with a tie game 33-33.
The Bobcats took their first lead of the game just under a minute into the third quarter, with Spinelli getting another pair at the line, however it wouldn't last long, with Millersville hitting their next shot to tie. FSU couldn't get their shots to fall, as they went nearly eight minutes in the period before getting their first field goal. Millersville was able to get a trio of layups and four free throws as part of a 12-1 run, building a 47-36 advantage with four minutes in the frame. Nichols would knock down a three to finally break the drought, while Flinn hit one of her own followed by a layup, though the Marauders answered each time, still leading by 10. After a couple of missed threes, Nichols hit two late free throws to end the third and make the score 54-46.
MU had the first points of the fourth before Muha would grab an offensive board and score while Nichols would create a steal that she would finish in the paint to get within six at 56-50. After back-to-back Millersville makes, Roman would net four consecutive freebies, then answered a Marauder three with a layup to stay within 63-56.The final five minutes belonged to MU, as Frostburg didn't make a field goal and were limited to just three Muha free throws. Millersville hit a trio of threes while getting layups and trips to the line to surge ahead late, leading to the 81-59 final.
Frostburg had three players score in double figures in Nichols, Muha and Spinelli with 12, 11 and 10, respectively. Muha just missed out on a double-double with a game-high nine rebounds, with Spinelli and Roman each adding eight apiece.
With the loss, FSU is now 1-2 on the season, with Millersville going to 2-1. The Bobcats return to the court Saturday, November 22 when they travel to play Lock Haven at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com
