Seven Different Goalscorers Lead Women's Soccer to Road Win Over Tigers
BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team picked up their fifth consecutive shutout with a 9-0 win on the road against Salem (WV) Saturday afternoon.
FSU began the game immediately on the front foot, earning a pair of early corners, the latter of which was flicked to the back post by senior Skylar Ehart and met by sophomore Ana Davis for a goal just two and a half minutes in. Over the next 10 minutes, the Bobcats peppered the SU goal with three shots off sophomores Ellie Fiedler, Mollie Rebuck, and Cassidy Paige, all of which were saved by Chloe Owens in net.
The Bobcats capitalized soon after, with senior Morgan Mrizek playing a great ball through to sophomore Madison Hobson, who crossed into Rebuck to finish for a 2-0 lead. Throughout the next 15 minutes, Mrizek, Rebuck, and Davis then all put efforts off target, while Fiedler, Mrizek, and senior Carly Gillette all drew saves from Owens.
A six-minute spell towards the end of the half put the result effectively in hand, as Frostburg added another three goals before the break. Davis began the surge by threading a ball to sophomore Elena Fernandez, who took a couple touches into the box before firing to the far post. Hobson then sprinted down the right side and crossed into senior Hannah Clagett, who finished extremely well off the volley for FSU's fourth. Another Hobson run into the box resulted in her third assist of the day, as her pass found Davis to spin and fire on her left foot into the bottom left corner for a 5-0 halftime lead.
FSU nearly had another quick goal to start the second frame, with freshman Molly Colbert's shot from just inside the 18 being tipped over by Owens. It wouldn't take long to find the back of the net, however, as senior Amanda Hawbecker crossed from the right wing to freshman Emma Hostetler, who was able to turn in the box and slot home on her left foot. Five minutes later, Hawbecker flicked a low corner into the path of Fiedler, who headed home for a 7-0 score.
For the next 15 minutes, Frostburg was denied by a combination of Owens, five shots off target, and Clagett hitting the crossbar. The Bobcats then polished off the scoring with a pair of goals four minutes apart, as Clagett unselfishly fed Mrizek for a tap-in, then freshman Reese Rizzo crossed to Hostetler for an easy finish and a nine-goal lead. With five minutes to go, freshman Ava Weibrecht enjoyed a moment to remember, as she calmly gathered a long free kick for her first collegiate save to complete the clean sheet.
FSU had 34 total shots with 23 being on target, as the Tigers had their one effort in the game saved.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 10-4-3 on the year, while Salem drops to 1-16. The Bobcats are back at home on Wednesday, November 5 to face Fairmont State in their regular season finale at 6 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
