Navy Uses Second Half Offense to Defeat Women's Rugby on Senior Day
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Rugby team fell in their regular season finale 53-36 to Navy on Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the match, FSU honored five of its seniors in Jordan Asiamah, Jaslyn Romero, Abby Stapleton, Molly Wentling, and Savannah Whipkey as they conclude their Bobcat careers.
Frostburg enjoyed a fast start to the game, as junior LJ Jordan sliced her way through the middle of the defense for a try two minutes in, with sophomore Natalie Allen knocking through the conversion for a 7-0 advantage. Just four minutes later, sophomore Makenzie Link broke through the Midshipmen defensive line for another try and Allen's conversion making it 14-0.
15 minutes into the half, Navy was able to find their footing, scoring a pair of tries in quick succession, with one of the conversions going through to pull within 14-12. FSU got the ball back after freshman Nora Million corralled a Mids kick, leading to senior Camryn Wyatt reaching across the line for a try and a 19-12 advantage. In the final 10 minutes, the Midshipmen hit back once again, netting another pair of tries, though neither conversion was successful, giving the visitors a 22-19 halftime lead.
It took Navy just 90 seconds to extend their lead to open the second period, this time with a clean conversion making it 29-19. The Mids kept their pressure up with another pair of tries within the first 10 minutes to surge ahead 39-19.
The Bobcats were able to halt momentum with sophomore Jakayla Phillips juking her way from the left wing into the middle of the field for a try, while Allen tacked on the conversion. Just before reaching the midway point of the half, freshman Izzy Sage brought Frostburg even closer after receiving a quick pass from senior Liberty Cawthorn, making the score 39-31.
Within a two-minute spell, the Midshipmen ensured there wouldn't be much hope of an FSU comeback, as they raced through for a try before taking a quick kick back immediately for another score, with a pair of successful conversions taking them to a 53-31 lead. In the last couple minutes, sophomore Scout Spadoni powered her way through several Mid defenders for the last score of the game and the 53-31 final.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 4-4 on the year and will next head to the Division II NIRA Rugby Tournament against top seed American International on Saturday, November 15 at 12 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
