Marcucci Ties Career High in Scoring as Solid Team Effort Leads Football to Revenge Win Over Pioneers

The Frostburg State Football team took down the Glenville State Pioneers on the road Saturday afternoon, capturing their sixth straight win with a 41-9 victory.

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Football team took down the Glenville State Pioneers on the road Saturday afternoon, capturing their sixth straight win with a 41-9 victory.

Frostburg elected to kick off to start the game, with Glenville starting their first drive on their own 18-yard line.  The Bobcat's defense stood tall right out of the gate, only giving the Pioneers eight yards on their first possession, causing GSU to go three and out and give the ball to Frostburg.  Redshirt sophomore Myles Fulton found junior Jeremiah Gibson for a 10-yard pick up and a first down on the first play of the drive.  Fulton then hit junior Amari N'namid Hall for back-to-back catches for a total of 17 yards.  With everything going right for FSU on their first possession, Glenville was able to hold the Bobcats causing sophomore Sam Dominguez to come out to punt.

GSU was able to secure one first down on their next possession but weren't able to push down field.  The Bobcats took over the ball with 4:58 left in the first but turned the ball over on the third play with the Pioneers picking up an interception.  Frostburg quickly responded, as junior Jaylen Boyd got his hand on the ball while making a tackle, knocking the ball loose on Glenville's first run and being able to recover it, setting FSU up on their own 36-yard line.  Fulton quickly took the field to set up the Bobcat's offense, going right to the air and hitting junior Sean Aaron for a short pass of six yards.  With no huddle, Fulton dropped back to pass again, connecting with redshirt sophomore Jordan Marcucci down field for a 65-yard gain and the first score of the game.  Now on top, FSU sent out senior Brandon Keen to knock down the extra point, setting the game at 7-0 with two minutes left in the first.

On the second play of the drive, Frostburg's defense came up huge again, as sophomore Carter Mazalewski was credited with a forced fumble, with senior Leonard Scott falling on the ball to give possession back to the Bobcats.  FSU again set up their offense, this time on Glenville's 25-yard line, as Fulton once again found the hands of Marcucci, sending him into the endzone for a 27-yard touchdown.  Keen tacked on the extra point once again, ending the first with Frostburg on top 14-0.

The Pioneers took possession into the second quarter, with senior DJ Denson breaking up a pass to get the drive started.  Both teams swapped penalties before GSU set up for a field goal attempt, but the Pioneers were given a chance again on offense when the Bobcats were charged with a roughing the passer penalty.  Glenville's offense looked ready to take advantage of the opportunity, but a sack from senior Yasir Holmes put the Pioneers back nine yards, causing them to settle for a field goal, bringing the score to 14-3 halfway through the second.

Fulton kicked off FSU's first possession of the quarter with a 14-yard dime to redshirt sophomore Owen Doyle.  The Bobcats only picked up one first down, sending Dominguez out to punt to give the ball back to GSU.  Tackles from Scott and senior Delonta Butler allowed the Pioneers to only get two yards on their drive, before a false start put Glenville back five more yards and prepared them to punt the ball away.  Frostburg got another chance with the ball before the half ended, with Fulton running eight yards to pick up a first down, after hitting N'namdi-Hall for a six-yard gain.  On 3rd and 10, Fulton connected with sophomore Trashaun Timmons for an 11-yard first down, but Glenville's defense came up with a sack to regain possession with just seconds left in the half.  Junior Wylan Harich and sophomore Darrell Scott were both credited with a pass break up each, before senior Colby Street created a quarterback hurry on 4th and 10, causing GSU to turn the ball over on downs and send the game into the break with a 14-3 score.

FSU started the second half with the ball, with senior Lance Blankenship fighting for a two-yard gain to pick up the first down on 4th and 1. Timmons caught another pass from Fulton, this time for 45-yards, putting Frostburg on Glenville's nine-yard line.  After carries from Aaron and Fulton himself, Fulton threw a dime to N'namdi-Hall for a nine-yard touchdown.  The Bobcats were unable to secure the extra point, leaving the game at 20-3 with five minutes gone in the third.

Glenville completed one pass for five yards on their next possession, going three and out.  Frostburg found themselves on their own 38-yard line, with Fulton running up the middle for a nine-yard pick up on the first play.  Doyle then ran for four yards, followed by a 10-yard run, picking up a first down each time.  Fulton hit N'namdi-Hall once again for a pass of eight yards, setting up Aaron for three straight carries that led him into the endzone for a seven-yard score on the ground.  Keen was able to convert the extra point this time, adding to the score to make it 27-3.  The Pioneers quickly went three and out on their next drive, but another penalty gave them the ball back on offense as they set up for a play.  Street was able to secure another tackle, this time for a loss of one, before GSU completed back-to-back passes for their first touchdown of the game.  Glenville looked to go for two, but were unable to connect, sending the game into the fourth with a 27-9 score.

The Bobcats took possession into the fourth, quickly scoring on a 2nd and 10 opportunity when Marcucci ran the field for his third touchdown of the game, this time on a 59-yard rush.  Keen trotted out to take the extra point, sending it through the uprights for a 34-9 FSU lead.  Everything went right for FSU in the start of the quarter, as the Bobcat's defense forced the Pioneers to another three and out, as junior Anthony Smith broke up a pass on 3rd and 14.  As GSU went to punt, Harich was able to sprint around and block the punt, recovering it right there on Glenville's 13-yard line.  Taking the great field possession, redshirt sophomore Andre Smith rushed for one-yard, before Fulton hit N'namdi-Hall for nine yards, followed by Gibson for a five-yard score, with Keen tacking on the extra point successfully for now a 41-9 game.

With over 11 minutes left in regulation, the Pioneers were unable once again to pick up a first down, as redshirt junior Josh McTier got in the way of a pass.  Frostburg sent out sophomore quarterback Jordan Brooks to take some snaps, as he handed the ball to sophomore KJ Smothers, who picked up 22 yards right off the bat.  Smothers rushed for another 12 yards, before Keen tried for a 26-yard field goal, but was unsuccessful.  GSU was able to march to midfield on their next drive, as both teams were called for multiple penalties once again.  With just over three minutes left in the quarter, the Bobcats saw one more possession, with Smith running for six yards on two carries.  Glenville got the ball back with 1:34 left on the clock, but was unable to put any more points on the board, allowing Frostburg to come out on top 41-9.

Fulton went 17-for-23 in the air, finishing the day with 238 yards and four touchdowns.  Marcucci finished out the day tying his career high of three touchdowns on two receptions for 92 yards and a 59-yard carry.  Timmons caught three passes for 61 yards, while N'namdi Hall caught six for 49 yards.  On the defensive end, Street and Boyd paved the way with five tackles each, all being solo and Street picking up a tackle for a loss.  Holmes was next with four tackles total, two tackles for a loss, and a sack, while Smith earned four solo tackles.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 6-0 on the season, while Glenville falls to 2-4.  The Bobcats return home for their next game, welcoming in conference rival Charleston (WV) on Saturday, October 19 at 1 PM for Homecoming.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
