Guy Leads Offense, Four Combine for Shutout as Baseball Takes Down Kutztown

The Frostburg State baseball team defeated Kutztown for their second straight win to start the season, winning 5-0 on Sunday evening.

CARY, N.C. – The Frostburg State baseball team defeated Kutztown for their second straight win to start the season, winning 5-0 on Sunday evening.

After a delayed start to the contest, the Bobcats went down in order during their first at-bats, while freshman Zach Dodson made his debut for FSU, getting the start and sitting down the first three batters he saw. Graduate Randy Steen lined a single the other way and senior Doyle McNew drew a walk to begin the second, but both were left on base after a fly out and strike-em-out throw-em-out with the former attempting to steal third. Dodson ran into some trouble in the bottom half, as a lead-off single and one-out double put a pair in scoring position, but the Linganore product wasn't deterred, striking out the next batter and then covering first to catch a grounder fielded by McNew to end the threat

The Bobcats got rolling in the third inning, as freshman Manny Hall reached on a knock through the right side followed by sophomore Ryan Bouma working a two-out walk. Seeking to keep the inning alive, senior Mikey Guy hit a triple into right center to bring in the game's first two runs, as he would also later score on a pass ball to go put Frostburg up 3-0 early. Dodson would use the momentum to strike out two in the bottom of the inning, while also being helped out by his defense throwing out a runner trying to advance to third on a double, preserving the lead.

Neither side found much offense in the fourth, as Bouma would draw another walk to get things started in the fifth. Guy hit his second triple of the day, picking up his third RBI in the process on a drive into the left-center gap. With the Bobcats up 4-0, the pitching would only get better with a cushion to work with, allowing just two more Golden Bears to reach base in the last five innings, as Dodson polished off a clean bottom half by striking out the side. FSU would add an insurance run in the sixth, with freshman CJ Carmichael crossing the plate after reaching on a double down the left field line followed by three consecutive walks to Hall, Bouma, and sophomore Jackson Schalick.

Seeing his day end after the sixth frame, Dodson worked around a double with a pair of pop-outs to Guy and a grounder fielded cleanly by Carmichael to keep the shutout bid going. Senior Ryan Adams was the next to take the mound in the seventh, getting out of a lead-off single with a 4-6-3 double play and another grounder to Carmichael. The eighth frame was freshman Josh Domaracki's turn to shine, as he got a swinging third strike on the first batter he saw, then allowed a walk but recovered with an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Looking to close things out, sophomore Bryce Hendricks stepped up in the ninth and sat KU down 1-2-3 on a trio of K's to complete the shutout.

Frostburg was patient at the plate, drawing 11 walks in total, as Bouma, McNew, and sophomore Logan Helser accounted for seven of them. Guy finished 2-5 with three RBI while Steen had a hit and two stolen bases. Dodson went six innings only giving up five hits while striking out nine to earn his first collegiate win. Adams, Domaracki and Hendricks would all pitch an inning in relief, combining four four strikeouts and just one hit allowed.

FSU is now 2-0 on the season, while Kutztown drops to 0-4. The Bobcats will wrap up their weekend with two games to play tomorrow, February 24 against Goldey-Beacom in a double header beginning at 10 AM. For more information please visit frostburgsports.com.
