MEC MBB First Round Preview: #10 Frostburg State vs #7 Glenville State
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team is set to travel to Wes Banco Arena for the first time since joining Division II at the 2024 Mountain East Conference Tournament on Wednesday evening to face off against seven seed Glenville State.
How They Got Here: The Bobcats come into the game as the 10-seed in the MEC, finishing one win above West Virginia Wesleyan to book their spot at the tournament. FSU took a pair of conference wins during the season, taking down WVWC 86-83 on the road before picking up a 104-99 home victory over Wheeling.
GSU ended the year with a 13-15 record, finishing 8-12 in the conference and earning the tiebreaker over Notre Dame College. The Pioneers had lost three of their final four games before defeating Concord in their regular season finale to wrap up the seventh seed.
The Matchup: Glenville holds the all-time series between the sides, winning six of the nine matchups, including a season sweep over Frostburg this season. The Bobcats last defeated the Pioneers at home during the 2022-23 season, but have dropped four of the past five contests.
The Players: FSU is led offensively by freshman Logan Lewis, who is averaging 13.1 points per game and is fifth in the conference shooting 48.9% from the floor. Defensively, he leads the team with 31 steals, and is second on the team in rebounding at 4.8 per game. Four other players average nearly nine points per game, in redshirt sophomore Justin Roseme (9.6) and juniors Robby Williams (9.5), JayShaun Freeman (9.0) and Koby Baptiste (8.9). Baptiste is the Bobcats' leader in rebounds (6.9), while Williams leads the team in made threes (40) and Roseme boasts the top three-point shooting percentage (43%).
GSU's top offensive performer is Second Team All-MEC selection Jordan Turbo Smith at 14.3 points per game, while also averaging 5.1 assists per game, which is third in the MEC, and leads the team with 36 steals. Also in double figures for the Pioneers is Devin Collins (13.5), an honorable mention All-MEC selection who also leads the team in threes made (64), three-point percentage (40.8%), and rebounding (5.4), and Dominiq Penn (12.6).
