Concord's Fast Start Paves Way for Victory over Men's Basketball
ATHENS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell 98-73 to Concord on the road Saturday.
CU began the game swiftly, forcing nine consecutive Bobcat misses while building up a 10-0 lead in the first five minutes. Sophomore Zane McCarty finally got FSU on the board with a jumper, then freshman Christopher Meakin knocked down a three to help settle the nerves. Within a three-minute spurt, senior Koby Baptiste took over the offense, scoring eight of the next ten Frostburg points, joining in with freshman Tony Pope to pull within three at the 10-minute mark.
It then would be junior Jaden Baker to close the gap further, as he scored the Bobcats' next seven to pull within a point at 23-22. The next minute and a half featured Concord catching fire offensively, knocking down a pair from behind the arc to go with two layups and a jumper, withstanding redshirt junior Justin Roseme hitting a trey to go ahead 35-25. Their defensive intensity ramped back up for the final five minutes of the half, as FSU was held to just two made field goals, while the Mountain Lions tacked on 18 points to take a 53-31 advantage into the break.
Back-to-back deep makes opened the CU lead to 28, with Roseme hitting a transition three followed by a jumper. McCarty hit a triple then Baker got into the lane for a bucket and took advantage of an offensive rebound for three, with the former getting a jumper to fall for a 75-47 score. Freshman Trey Simmons made his mark on the contest with a drive to the rim followed by a three of his own, then redshirt freshman Blake Burrows put another one on the board. Simmons consistently made his way through the lane in the final few minutes, converting three lay-ins and a dunk to make the final score 98-73.
Baker (16) and Simmons (13) each reached double figures, with the former also leading FSU in rebounds at six and assists with three.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 9-11 on the year, while Concord improves to 10-7. The Bobcats remain on the road as they travel to West Virginia State on Wednesday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
