Men's Basketball Concludes Season With First Round Tournament Loss to GSU

The Frostburg Men's Basketball team ended their first appearance in the MEC Tournament with a 95-59 loss to Glenville State in the first round.

WHEELING, W. Va. – The Frostburg Men's Basketball team ended their first appearance in the MEC Tournament with a 95-59 loss to Glenville State in the first round.

GSU quickly raced out to a 7-0 lead with just over two minutes gone, until freshman Malcolm Day put FSU on the board with a layup at the 17:20 mark. The Pioneers got an and-one to lead by eight, but back-to-back scores from juniors Robby Williams and JayShaun Freeman got Frostburg back to within four. Glenville scored five unanswered, but Williams kept the Bobcats in striking distance with a pair of threes for a 17-12 score with 12 minutes on the clock.

Still getting separation, GSU scored five of the next six points, leading by nine, but freshman Zane McCarty took advantage of a Williams steal, then freshman Logan Lewis hit a three in transition to pull within 22-18. Over the next six minutes, the Pioneers locked in defensively, going on a 17-3 run that suddenly put them ahead by 18 with a minute and a half to go in the first 20. Lewis scored FSU's next four points, but was matched by a Glenville three and buzzer-beating jumper, as they held a 44-25 advantage at the break.

Pushing the lead to over 20, the Pioneers began the second half scoring at the free throw line, with Day driving in for a layup to kick things off for Frostburg. Seven quick GSU points were hit back through Day at the charity stripe and Freeman from behind the arc, with FSU still trailing by 21. Back-to-back Glenville treys put them up by over 30, which they maintained until McCarty hit a pair of free throws and Freeman and graduate Jaylon Johnson knocked down back-to-back threes at 69-42 in the final 10 minutes.

The Pioneers continued to roll on offense, surging back up over the 30-point mark and nearly going up by 40, though freshman Vilius Slanina provided a late spark for the Bobcats, scoring seven of their next eight points, with senior Cole Harshman ending the contest with a late three-pointer, as GSU came out ahead 95-59.

With the loss, Frostburg ends their season at 3-26, while Glenville improves to 14-15 and advances to face West Liberty in the quarterfinal round of the MEC Tournament.
