High-Powered Offense Gives Men's Lacrosse Road Victory Over Roberts Wesleyan

The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team defeated Roberts Wesleyan in an ECC matchup on Saturday afternoon by a score of 20-13.

ROCHESTER, NY – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team defeated Roberts Wesleyan in an ECC matchup on Saturday afternoon by a score of 20-13.

The Redhawks were quick to start on their home field, scoring the first three goals of the game through the first six minutes. The Bobcats started to answer back in the final nine minutes, as junior Gregg Dort Jr won the next face off and junior Ryan Tyler picked up the ground ball. Graduate Bubba Love had a solo goal to put FSU on the board 3-1, then RWU had a shot blocked. Junior Landon Bruce got the ground ball started the successful clear for FSU, where graduate Chase Buckwalter assisted Love for another score to pull within 3-2. Roberts took the next faceoff and had a shot that hit the post but got the rebound and went up 4-2. With less than two minutes to play, FSU tied the game at four apiece after graduate Owen McCallum and senior Austin Sipes respectfully found their way past Redhawks goalie for a 4-4 score after the first 15.

FSU got their first lead of the game at 5-4 when graduate Justin Hulse found senior Tyler Dooley who put one in the back of the net. Junior Alex Walstrum won the resulting faceoff  and ground ball, which led to a shot and goal by freshman Luke Roach for a two-goal advantage. Within the next four minutes, Roberts Wesleyan tied the game once again before taking their lead back at 7-6 after a saved shot and successful clear attempt. FSU battled back with two goals by McCallum and Hulse within 30-seconds to take an 8-7 advantage. Each team traded goals, with McCallum making it 9-7 before the Redhawks responded, as Buckwalter ended the half with another score with less than 30 seconds left for a 10-8 contest.

An early turnover by the Bobcats led to RWU clearing the ball and getting the score within one at 10-9. Dort took matters into his own hands, winning the faceoff and groundball then immediately scoring 11-9, with Walstrum then earning another FO win, bringing the ball into FSU's offensive box. Sipes, with his head on a swivel, fed Hulse to put another away for the Bobcats and a three-goal lead. Within 18-seconds, FSU took their greatest lead of the game, as goals scored by Sipes and Love advanced the score up to 14-9 as part of a 6-2 run. RWU scrambled back with two goals in the next two minutes to get within 14-11. Now under three minutes to go, FSU had a man-up opportunity, where Sipes found the back of the net 15-11 to go into the fourth.

RWU started the fourth a man-up, as on the advantage, they got back within three at 15-12. Keeping the Redhawks at bay, Buckwalter had three goals within two minutes to elevate FSU's score all the way to 18-12. A caused turnover by Dort awarded senior Nick Agresta a groundball, leading to a goal by sophomore Hayden McCullough 19-12. Love traded goals with RWU to see the score at 20-13 to end the game.

Buckwalter and Love finished with four goals each, followed by McCullum and Sipes each with three. Hulse and Buckwalter led with three assists apiece as five different Bobcats recorded at least four points. Goalie Nate Jones finished with six saves in the defensive effort, as Dort Jr. and Agresta each caused a pair of turnovers.

With the conclusion of today's game, Frostburg moves to an overall record of 9-2 and a conference record of 3-0, while Roberts Wesleyan falls to an overall record of 7-5 and a conference record of 1-2.
