Men's Swimming Dominates at Vulcan Invitational in Two Day Sweep
CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Frostburg State Men's Swim team completed a two-day victory at the Vulcan Invitational, besting Bethany and Salem (WV) across each day.
FSU couldn't have asked for a better start to the meet, as their 200 free relay teams went first through third, starting with sophomore Dylan King, junior Josh Horner, senior Mikkel LeBlanc, and graduate PJ Emrich (1:30.60) followed by sophomores Josh Stokes and Tory Reynolds, freshman Dylan Dela-Vega, and senior Sean O'Connor (1:33.10), then finishing up with juniors Nigel Webster and Alex Whitton, sophomore Isaac Cummings, and freshman Nate Schwarz (1:34.06).
Senior Nate Canapp picked up the first individual victory of the game in the 400 IM, winning at 4:24.67, followed by Reynolds taking the 50 free in 22.60. The one-two punch of senior Tave Chanthavong (1:00.78) and Emrich (1:02.79) took the 100 breast, while freshman Bradin Norris (2:09.36) led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 back, joined by Stokes (2:10.86) and Horner (2:11.64).
Finishing the first day in similar fashion to how it started, the Bobcats took each of the first two spots in the 400 medley relay, as Stokes, Chanthavong, junior Andrew Wetherhold, and senior Jaden Tipton (3:47.73) won, with Horner, Emrich, LeBlanc, and sophomore Jack Bond taking second at 3:48.95.
Frostburg took the day comfortably at 291 points, with Salem the next closest at 120.
Day two began with yet another relay victory, this time in the 200 medley, as Stokes, Chanthavong, King, and LeBlanc served up a 1:39.85. King went on to take the 100 fly in 53.14.
The Bobcats had a pair of impressive performances in the 200 breast and the 100 back, going first through third in each event. Canapp led the former in 2:19.12, just beating out Emrich's 2:19.13, with O'Connor wrapping up in 2:30.21, then in the latter event, Norris took a 57:63 followed by Horner (59.55) and Cummings (1:01.72).
Canapp tacked on another victory in the 1,650 free (17:04.02), while FSU ended the day in the same style they started the weekend, winning each of the top three spots in the 400 free relay. Cummings, Reynolds, Stokes, and Schwarz (2:28.30) took first, then Horner, Bond, Webster, and Whitton (2:28.93) and finally King, Norris, Dela-Vega, and O'Connor (3:31.44).
Frostburg took the second competition with a slightly larger margin of victory, scoring 296 points and the next closest at 116.
FSU will return to the pool for their regular season finale, as the host Salem on Friday, January 17 at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
