Dramatic Final Race Gives Men's Swimming First-Ever Win Over Mary Washington
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Swim team won a dramatic final race to take a 133-129 victory over Mary Washington, the program's first-ever win over the Eagles.
After UMW kicked off the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, the Bobcats stormed back in the 1,650-yard freestyle, as junior Nate Canapp (16:57.93), freshman Jack Bond (17:17.72), and senior Justin Geiszler (17:38.78) took the top three spots. Canapp (4:54.63) and Bond (5:01.13) went on to pick up first and third, respectively, in the 500-yard free, as senior Noah Loper came in second at 5:00.59 to complete the FSU sweep.
Loper earned a victory in the 200-yard free at 1:46.53 before placing second in the 100 free at 48.71, finishing just ahead of sophomore Julian Najarro Sedar's 49.35 in third. The latter had an impressive pair of wins in both the 50-yard free (21.76) and the 100-yard fly (52.24). Freshman Tory Reynolds (22.45) finished second behind him in the former race, while freshman Dylan King (52.86) did the same in the latter.
In the breaststroke events, junior Luka Smith eked out a win by .02 seconds in the 200 with a time of 2:15.28, while coming second in the 100 at 1:01.62. Capping off the individual races, senior Jackson Miller had a runner-up finish of 2:03.89 in the 200-yard backstroke.
After the individual races were calculated, UMW held a narrow lead, meaning that FSU had to come up with a win in the final 400-yard free relay to take the meet. Sedar took the first leg and gave the Bobcats an early lead, to which King and Loper held onto, before Miller closed the race out, finishing 0.7 seconds ahead of the Eagles to win with a time of 3:12.17.
With the win, Frostburg ends the regular season with a record of 6-5, while Mary Washington falls to 4-4. The men next return to the pool for the GMAC/MEC Championships from February 14-17 in Canton, Ohio. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
