Burks Takes Decathlon, McCoy Wins Pole Vault in Day 2 of MEC Championships

The Frostburg State Men's Track & Field team moved into third place after day two of the MEC Outdoor Championships on Monday.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Track & Field team moved into third place after day two of the MEC Outdoor Championships on Monday.
 
On the second day of the decathlon, junior Marquise Burks maintained his first-place finish with a score of 6,284 to repeat as MEC champion. He won four of the final five events, including the 110-mteter hurdles (15.62), discus (40.81m), pole vault (3.90m), and javelin (41.65m), setting new personal bests in the discus and javelin. Sophomore Mason Reed earned third in the event, securing runner-up finishes in both the 110m hurdles (15.90) and the pole vault (3.60m). Throughout the meet, he set new PR's in the discus (23.69m) and the 1,500 meters (5:04.67).
 
Also picking up a win on the day, junior Tom McCoy was tops in the pole vault at 4.80m, followed by Burks, Reed, and sophomore Ryan Schlauch in positions five through seven at 3.65m. Reed's mark was a new personal best in the event.
 
In the field events, sophomore Ben Treat earned a spot on the podium with third place in the shot put at 15.06m, a new personal best and the fifth-best throw in school history. Senior Rondell Carlton placed fourth in the triple jump, setting a new career high at 13.65m.
 
Along with the final competitions and scores coming in from the field events, several preliminary races were held in preparation for tomorrow's finals. In the 100 meters, freshman Ka'Von Turner ran a personal best 10.73 to qualify fourth overall. Freshman Nate Shields (22.07) scored a personal mark in the 200-meter preliminaries as did freshman Jaxon Jones (1:55.48) in the 800 meters. In the 400 meters, senior Nate Mesy (48.26) qualified second overall, while Reed (16.06) snuck in at the eighth spot in the 110m hurdles.
