Softball Splits Series With Glenville in Pair of Low-Scoring Affairs
GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Softball team split their Sunday conference doubleheader on the road with Glenville State, coming back to take game one with a 2-1 score, but falling in game two with another final of 2-1.
Junior Samara Funk connected on a leadoff single to start the day, but three straight outs stranded her on base. Senior Jamie Roberts got the nod from the circle for Frostburg in game one, picking up two strikeouts in her first inning for a quick 1-2-3 bottom half. Junior Cristina Sommerkamp knotted another leadoff single for the Bobcats in the start of the second, as another three quick outs left her on base. Glenville was able to get their bats going in the bottom half of the inning, collecting their first two hits of the game and scoring a run for a 1-0 lead.
Both teams saw the minimum number of batters in the third, with Roberts knotting another strikeout. FSU remained quiet on offense in the fourth, as GSU went for another pair of hits, but Roberts stranded one on base to keep the score at 1-0. Sophomore Ashlynn Routzahn reached base in the top of the fifth on an error by the Pioneers' outfield but was stranded still without a score. Roberts pitched another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the fifth, as Roberts then put Frostburg on the board in the top of the sixth, smashing a two-run homer to center field, scoring sophomore Gracie Nelson, who reached on a single, allowing the Bobcats to jump ahead 2-1.
Roberts, dominating on both sides of the plate, sat Glenville down again in order in both the sixth and seventh innings, with FSU leaving one runner on in the top of the seventh, as the Bobcats took game one with a 2-1 final.
Funk was the first base runner once again for either team to start game two, reaching on an error by Glenville, as Roberts was walked to put two on for the Bobcats, but both were left on base. Senior Katie Chapple threw from the circle in game two, going for a 1-2-3 first outing, picking up one strikeout. Frostburg saw a quiet and quick look at offense in the second, as the Pioneers' bats came alive in the bottom half of the inning, smacking four hits for two runs for the lead after two.
Sophomore Arden Miller blasted a homer over the left field fence to get the third rolling, cutting the score in half to 2-1. Chapple kept Glenville quiet in the bottom of the inning, as both teams remained hitless in the fourth inning, with the Pioneers stranding a runner on base. Sophomore Olivia Stetler recorded the lone hit of the fifth for FSU, as the Bobcats were unable to capitalize with a runner on. GSU put their leadoff runner on in the bottom half of the fifth, as sophomore Ally Meyers came in to pitch the rest of the frame, giving up another Glenville hit but stranding both runners to keep the score at 2-1 heading into the sixth.
Roberts knocked a single in the top of the sixth, with freshman Katie Healy coming in to pinch run, as she advanced to second on a single to center from Routzahn. Sommerkamp then put a single into right field, as Healy was thrown out attempting to score on the play with Routzahn getting to third, but Frostburg was unable to put any runs on the board.
Meyers saw a 1-2-3 inning from the circle in the bottom half of the inning, setting the Bobcats up for their last chance at-bats in the top of the seventh. Senior Ava Gnibus was able to get on board to start the seventh, reaching on an error by the Pioneers. Miller then put the ball in play, reaching on a fielder's choice, but with one on and two outs, FSU was unable to get anything going, falling in game two with a score of 2-1.
Sommerkamp led Frostburg offensively on the day, snagging a trio of hits, as Roberts was right behind her with a pair of knocks and a two RBI. Roberts picked up her eighth win and 10th complete game of the season in game one, giving up only four hits and one run while walking none and striking out six.
With the split, FSU moves to 22-15 on the season, while Glenville goes to 16-17.
