Three Singles Wins Not Enough for Women's Tennis in Close Loss to Mercyhurst
ERIE, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Tennis team concluded their weekend with a narrow 4-3 loss to Mercyhurst on Sunday night.
Beginning the meet in doubles play, MU took a sweep of all three pairings to earn the point. FSU came agonizingly close to winning at the No. 2 spot, but sophomore Alyssa Kush and freshman Lauren Ceballos came up just short in a 7-6 loss.
In a balanced singles competition, the Lakers did just enough to secure the meet victory, earning wins at each of the top three places to get the needed four match points. The Bobcats had some fight at them from the Nos. 4-6 matches, with junior Mariaspa Kotsiou (7-6, 6-7, 10-8) and freshman Lauren Ceballos (4-6, 6-4, 10-8) battled their way to three-set victories. Freshman Patricia Castejon had a slightly easier time as the final winner of the day, winning in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 4-4 on the year, while Mercyhurst improves to 7-1. The Bobcats return to the court on Saturday, March 9 for a road match against Bloomsburg at 4 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
