Cardinals Heavyweight Victory Leads to Dual Win Over Men's Wrestling
WHEELING, W. Va. - The Frostburg State men's wrestling team traveled to Wheeling for its first dual of the season, falling 23-18.
Frostburg was coming off a solid showing at the Pioneer Open, where they finished third overall entering their opening Mountain East Conference dual.
Wheeling would take the 125 match by fall for an early 6-0 lead before freshman Tanner Halling, fresh off his tournament win at 133, got the Bobcats right back in the dual with a 19-3 tech fall to pull within 6-5. The Cardinals went back-to-back in the 141 and 149 matches, winning the former by an 11-0 major decision and the latter on a 4-2 decision to lead 13-5.
Senior Nico D'Amico would get a major decision at 157 to start a run of three straight FSU wins, as graduate Alexander Blake and junior Noah Reho would earn decisions at 165 and 174, respectively, to pull narrowly ahead 15-13. WU responded with a 12-4 major decision at 184, while sophomore Austin Lewis picked up a 12-5 decision to put Frostburg narrowly ahead 18-17 with only one match to go.
Coming down to the deciding 285 match, Wheeling's Gavin Harper earned a pinfall victory in the first round for the 23-18 dual win.
With the loss, Frostburg begins the year 0-1 while Wheeling starts out 1-0. FSU will host Shippensburg and Fairmont State for the Bobcat Duals on Sunday, November 9 beginning at 2 PM for their home opener. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
