Pitching Staff Combines for 16 Strikeouts in Game One as Baseball Splits with Yellow Jackets

The Frostburg State Baseball team split their away MEC doubleheader on Sunday against the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets, clenching a 6-2 victory in game and dropping game two 5-2.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Baseball team split their away MEC doubleheader on Sunday against the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets, clenching a 6-2 victory in game and dropping game two 5-2.

FSU started quickly on offense in game one, with junior Mikey Guy drawing a walk, stealing second, and being sent home to score on an RBI single to left from junior Danny Estrada for a fast 1-0 Bobcat lead.  Senior Max Proctor got the nod for Frostburg in game one, striking out the side in his first trip to the mound.  With junior Ben Weiman and senior Stafford Allison on first and second to start the second inning, Weiman ripping a single and Allison drawing a walk, senior Lucas Gulczynski singled through the left side sending Weiman in to score for a 2-0 game. Proctor again faced the minimum number of batters in the bottom half of the inning, picking up two more strikeouts, leaving Frostburg with a 2-0 advantage heading into the third. 

A walk and hit by pitch placed Guy and Estrada on first and second to kick things off offensively in the third, as freshman Ryan Bouma advanced both runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. WVSU recorded a throwing error, allowing Guy and Estrada to both score, putting the Bobcats up 4-0.  In the the bottom of the third and top of the fourth, only outs were recorded as Proctor sat the Yellow Jackets down in order, picking up two more strikeouts.

Looking into the top of the fifth, Estrada placed himself on second after being walked and stealing a base. Bouma made contact with the ball, hitting a long double, giving Estrada plenty of time to run home to push the score to 5-0. Bouma crossed home for the sixth and final run for FSU after he took third off a wild pitch and came into score on a sacrifice fly from Weiman to see the score at 6-0.

WVSU earned two back-to-back doubles which lead to their first run of the day in the bottom of the fifth. Proctor recorded three more outs with two quick strikeouts to get out of the inning, as the Bobcats saw a quiet offensive inning in the top of the sixth to leave the game at 6-1.  Freshman Bryce Hendricks came in to pitch for Frostburg to start the bottom half of the sixth, earning two strikeouts and giving up one run for a 6-2 game.  FSU's offense remained quiet in the top of the seventh, as freshman Jack Ray came in to seal the 6-2 win for the Bobcats in game one while striking out the side.  

The Yellow Jackets took charge in game two earning four runs in the first inning off a trio of singles and a homerun, recording four runs on four hits, as sophomore Joe Pippin got the start in game two.  Frostburg saw a very quiet first two at-bats, as freshman Evan Biddle came in to pitch in the bottom of the second, facing only four batters.  Both teams saw a slow third and fourth inning, with WVSU collecting a single in the bottom of the fourth off junior Hayden Ford.

With graduates Ben Vok and Daniel Morgano taking over on the mound for the Bobcats in the bottom of the fifth, WVSU added one more run to their lead.  Junior Randy Steen recorded FSU's first hit of the day with a single to to third in the sixth, but was left on base.  Freshman Bryce Synder then got the nod for the Bobcats in the bottom half of the inning, recording one strikeout.  Freshman Ryan Bouma led off the seventh inning with a double to left center, scoring on an RBI single up the middle from junior Cy Probst to put Frostburg on the board.  Freshman Tiernan Daly came in to pinch run for Probst, advancing to second and third as senior Justin Jimenez was hit by a pitch and the Yellow Jackets recorded an error, coming home to score on a sacrifice fly from Steen.  The Bobcats were unable to put anything else together, dropping the second game 5-2.  

Steen and Bouma led FSU with hits on the day, each recording a pair and combining for a pair of runs abd RBI as well.  Proctor earned his third win of the season off of game one, throwing five innings giving up only three hits and one run, while walking none and striking out 11.  Hendricks struck out two in one inning pitched, while Ray struck out three.  

With the conclusion of today's doubleheader, Frostburg's record stands at 13-7 while West Virginia State's record reads 12-9. The Bobcats are back in action on Tuesday, March 26 as they take on the Shepherd Rams for a nine-inning game starting at 3pm in Frostburg.
