Men's Soccer 2023 Season Preview
FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State Athletics will be taking a preview of each team competing in the fall season, covering eight total sports. Over the next three weeks, each team will be broken down into their expectations, key players, and overall outlook for their season and program. Next up to be covered is Men's Soccer.
Overall
Frostburg State Men's Soccer will play its 80th season this fall in their 2023 season. Head Coach Keith Byrnes will enter his 22nd season with the team.
Last Season
The Bobcats put up a 4-9-5 record last year, including a 3-9-4 MEC record, their fourth season in the conference. FSU's season ended in October in the regular season, as their wins came early on against Seton Hill, Concord, and twice against Alderson Broaddus. Off the field, Byrnes saw six players receive All-MEC Academic awards and 12 receive Commissioner's Honor Roll awards.
The Returners
Facing a decent amount of roster turnover, Frostburg does welcome back 19 players from the 2022 season. Graduate Joel Assal returns after missing last season through injury, where he will get competition from returning junior Brennan Moore. Seniors Gage Adam, Bryce Costello, and Alex Retzos will return on defense, accompanied by junior Caleb Dell and sophomore Carlos Quintero Rivas. In front of them at midfield will be graduate Scott Fernandez, seniors Andre Tenorio and Alex Grasso, and sophomores Daniel Medina, Sebastian Vargas, and Renzo Vargas. The pack up front will be led by the trio of junior Abdur-Rahman Neama and sophomores Anthony Ibarra and Kevin Garcia-Torres.
The Newcomers
Byrnes looks to add multiple new faces to the mix, with five transfers and five freshmen coming in. The Bobcats will add senior Alex Flores, juniors Firas Abdelgadir, Olly Green, and Laki Psallidas, and sophomore Philipp Hausmann, all experienced players at the collegiate level. Logan Malone and Hugo Portillo come in as a duo of freshmen attackers, with freshmen Brian Gomez and Tom Leinhos defending incoming goalkeeper Joncarlo Schooler.
Kick off to Season
FSU will open their season on their home turf on Thursday, August 31, as they host California (Pa.) at 7 PM. The Bobcats quickly go into MEC play, as they remain at home to face West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, September 3 at 1 PM.
