Kelly Reaches 100th CT, Haney, DeMaio Carry Offense to Unbeaten MEC Slate

The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team cruised past Davis & Elkins to complete an undefeated MEC season with a 24-3 road victory.

ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team cruised past Davis & Elkins to complete an undefeated MEC season with a 24-3 road victory.

It took just under 50 seconds after graduate Camden DeMaio got the opening draw control for the Bobcats to make their mark, as senior Julia Badolato netted the game's opening goal. After the Senators took the next draw, senior Grace Dickey denied a free position chance, setting FSU back up on offense. Having gained the clear, junior Neila Haney sliced through the defense for a 2-0 lead with just under three minutes gone. With nine minutes on the clock, DeMaio scored her first of the day off Badolato's assist, then just 12 seconds later Haney took the draw and fed the former for a 4-0 advantage. Davis & Elkins took a timeout in hopes of turning the tide, which worked initially after a Frostburg turnover on their defensive end allowed Jasmine Whorton to get the hosts on the board.

The goal motivated the Bobcats, ramping up the pressure with senior Kerri Hayes taking advantage of a Senator yellow card for a man-up free position goal. After a D&E turnover, senior Natalie Williams dished to Haney to grow the lead to 6-1. Dickey made another save to deny a second Davis & Elkins goal, then DeMaio went for back-to-back goals, with Williams providing an assist on the latter for a seven-goal advantage. The sides traded possessions, with senior Delaney Devers causing a turnover to put Frostburg back in control, where Haney put away two straight chances to end the first up 10-1.

Sophomore Kelly Johnson picked up the first DC of the second quarter, which set up a Badolato solo effort just over a minute in. Over the next three minutes, junior Jessie Bare and freshman Kamryn Lee each picked up CT's to ensure the Senators couldn't add to their total, with DeMaio powering home another score to go ahead 12-1. Both teams struggled with turnovers and putting shots on frame over the next five minutes until Badolato again turned provider to junior Emily Lamoreaux, who made it back-to-back scores after being found by Williams. D&E put their only shot of the quarter wide with three minutes to go, as FSU made it a 16-1 halftime advantage after DeMaio and Haney scored off assists from Williams and Badolato, respectively.

Having seen quick goals in each of the first two quarters, it took three minutes for the Bobcats to find the back of the net in the third, with Badolato providing the breakthrough on a DeMaio assist. Haney created her own chance following a Davis & Elkins save, causing a turnover and taking the ball to goal herself. The Senators finally broke their drought after gaining the resulting draw and going straight to net for an 18-2 game. Over the next five minutes, Haney earned another CT, followed by another from junior Izzy Kelly, which was the 100th of her career. Junior Sydney Stone and DeMaio scored a minute and a half apart, ending the third with Frostburg ahead 20-2.

Junior Julia Mangini kicked off the final frame with an impressive caused turnover and groundball, while at the other end classmate Daniella Boss took advantage of a free position chance. Two minutes later, Hayes caused a turnover and immediately set up Boss for a 20-goal lead. D&E put another shot wide of the mark, while Stone was the next to score as a result of a foul. A minute and a half later, it was the Senators' turn to score from a free position for their third and final goal of the contest, but Hayes kept the momentum moving with a caused turnover and goal with just under two minutes to go. Senior Nicole Gray shut down the final Davis & Elkins attack, ending the contest with FSU coming away 24-3 winners.

Haney and DeMaio led the attack with a combined 13 goals and two assists, while Badolato netted a hat trick in each category and Williams chipped in with four dimes.

With the win, Frostburg concludes their regular season at 11-6, while D&E drops to 7-11. Both teams will now advance to the MEC Tournament, where FSU has locked in their spot to the No. 1 seed. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
