Boards, Relay Teams Help Carry Women's Track & Field to 5th at Messiah Invite
GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Track and Field team took part in the three-day Messiah Multis and Invitational from Thursday until Saturday, placing fifth overall at the meet.
Sophomore Bella Mastria kicked off the meet by taking second overall in the Heptathlon at 4,129 points, the fourth-highest score in program history. She took first in the 200m (26.30) and the long jump (5.76m), setting the second-farthest mark in school history in the process. Joining her in the event was freshman Reghan Sivic, who put up 2,530 points for seventh all-time at FSU, with her best event coming in the shot put where she was third at 9.31m.
In the sprints, junior Valerie Boards took part in each of Frostburg's four victories on the day, taking individual wins in the 100m (12.21) and the 200m (25.43), setting a new personal best in the former event that also ties her for third all-time in program history. Freshman Erin Collins also PR'd in the 100 at 13.37, while sophomore Lucy Crowe placed fourth overall in the 400m (1:02.05) and junior Claire Breighner (1:11.71) set a new career best in the event. Crowe followed up with a fourth-place finish in the long jump at 5.15m. Mastria, Boards, Crowe, and Collins went on to set the fastest 4x100m time at the meet, winning in 49.62, while the latter three and freshman Kenlee Hayes won the 4x400m in 4:15.96.
Sophomore Hannah Schauman (12:25.41) and freshman Reilly Teague (19:02.81) led the distance events, each taking third overall in the 3K Steeplechase and the 5K, respectively, the latter also setting a PR in her event. The 10K featured a trio of Bobcat personal bests, with senior Amy Tarcza leading the way in fourth overall and fifth in school history at 39:13.44, followed by classmate Chelsea Montau (43:22.95) and sophomore Clare Woodring (46:09.57). Freshman Keira Taylor also set a personal high in the 800m at 2:31.89.
During the throws, freshman Sarah Heasley set a personal best 29.57m in the javelin which puts her 10th all-time in program history. Sophomores Jocelyn Cacek and Maria Hiles each also set a pair of PR's, the former going for 9.53m in the shot put and 23.97m in the hammer, while the latter went 26.79m in the discus and 29.99m in the hammer.
Frostburg next will travel to Baltimore, Md. to take part in the Hopkins/Loyola Invite from Friday, April 18 until Saturday, April 19. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
