Pettyjohn's Early Goal, Doty's Career Day Lead Women's Soccer to Draw with WVSU
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team earned a 1-1 draw at home on Wednesday against West Virginia State.
After eight minutes without much action, the Yellow Jackets were given a free kick from the top corner of the 18 and fired at sophomore Kayla Doty, who tipped the ball onto the post before clearing the ball away. Six minutes later, on virtually their first attack of the day, FSU got the ball up to sophomore Mollie Rebuck, who laid the ball off to senior Morgan Mrizek for a fantastic ball into the box for junior Chelsea Pettyjohn, firing into the top of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Another six minutes later, senior Carly Gillette tried her luck from distance on her left foot but went wide of the net. From that point, WVSU began to maintain possession in Frostburg's half, getting away four shots in eight minutes, but three were saved by Doty while another went just wide as the Bobcats held on to their lead. With five to go until the break, Doty dove to her right to keep another shot out, getting to halftime with the 1-0 score.
Within the first five minutes of the second period, the Yellow Jackets had a pair of efforts that were both gathered by Doty. At the other end, Mrizek had a great chance to get a second goal, but she fired right at Poppy Bastock in net. WV State then had a dominant four-minute span in which one shot went just over the bar, another was kept out by Doty, and a third fell to Sara Paris Filter with space in the box, with her deflected effort going just past Doty's leg for a 1-1 equalizer.
WVSU continued to drive numbers forward but Doty was equal to every shot, keeping the tie preserved. Another Bobcat opportunity fell to sophomore Cassidy Paige after being played through the left side, but she couldn't trouble Bastock enough with an outside-the-foot shot. Doty again dove to her right to keep a Yellow Jacket shot out, as the visitors' Ellise Rennie had the best chance the rest of the way, but put her volley over the bar 12 yards from goal as things finished 1-1.
WV State held a 17-5 shots advantage, with 12 on goal compared to the Bobcats' three, as Doty made a career-high 11 saves.
With the draw, Frostburg now stands at 6-4-2 on the year, while WVSU is now 8-3-1. FSU will next hit the road to face West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday, October 19 at 3 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
