Volleyball Drops Day Two Matches to Ohio Dominican and Northwood to Conclude Warrior Invitational
DETROIT, Mich. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team concluded their second day in the Warrior Invitational on Saturday with 3-0 losses to both Ohio Dominican and Northwood.
Frostburg picked up there first three points off an error from Ohio Dominican, taking an early 3-2 lead in the beginning of set one. The first kill of the day for the Bobcats came from freshman Devin Brunk, as she smacked down the FSU point off an assist from senior Fiona Gonzalez Medina. Senior Brenna Siperko earned the next kill for Frostburg, off the push from freshman Emery Kuebler, as the Bobcats found themselves in front 8-5. The Panthers struggled with mistakes, giving FSU a few more points, allowing Frostburg to push their lead to 11-8. Kills from Kuebler and freshman Dani Kunkle kept the Bobcats in front, before ODU was able to surge and tie the game up at 15 apiece. Both teams traded points back and forth off the next few rallies, before back-to-back kills from Ohio Dominican gave them a 20-19 advantage. Points from Kuebler and Brunk brought the set back to a tie, prior to Kunkle tallying a service ace to give FSU a slight 22-21 edge. Junior Amanda Knieper kept Frostburg in the game, before an attack error from Ohio Dominican put the Bobcats up by one, 25-24. The Panthers sparked when they needed to, as they captured the next three straight points to steal set one with a 27-25 final.
Sophomore Paige Mock swatted down the first point of set two, with a service ace from Brunk putting FSU in front 2-1. ODU surged for two runs of points, taking over the lead 8-3. Kunkle and Kubler provided the next offensive action for Frostburg, as a kill from Knieper brought the team within two. The Panthers strung together another three point run, finding themselves ahead by five once again. Knieper and Brunk put rallies together to knock down some points for the Bobcats, but Ohio Dominican remained in front. A kill from Knieper and an attack error by the Panthers brought Frostburg within three, but ODU surged back ahead by five. With the help of Brunk and Knieper, the Bobcats did fight to bring the match to 24-22, but the Panthers were able to seal the deal with one more point, taking set two 25-22.
Ohio Dominican took that momentum into set three, scoring the first five points of the set to jump out to ahead 5-0. ODU continued to play well, with the scoring reading 11-3, as Frostburg earned their points all on errors from the Panthers. A kill by Mock saw the Bobcat's first team point of the match, as the score saw 13-5. A point from Kunkle and an attack error by ODU cut the Panthers lead in half, before Ohio Dominican doubled their lead for a 18-8 game. Knieper started another stream of points for FSU, bringing Frostburg within five, before the Panthers took set three with a score of 25-16 after four straight points.
Knieper led Frostburg in kills in game one with eight, while Kunkle provided five and Brunk hit four. Kuebler dished out a team-high 17 assists, while Gonzalez Medina collected 11 digs.
In the second game of the day and last of the Warrior Invitational, Frostburg was matched up against Northwood. The Timberwolves would put the first point of the game up on the board with an ace, before going on a run to go up 10-3 over FSU. The Bobcats finally settled in, picking up five straight points to pull the set back to 10-8. Frostburg would string together another five-point run, fueled by three aces from Knieper, to go ahead 13-11. The first set evened back up at 15 points each before Northwood went on another run. After five straight points, the Bobcats fought of one set point play, before dropping the first set 25-17.
The second set saw the teams trade off kills early on, as Knieper, Siperko, Brunk, Mock and freshman Allison Brown all picked up a kill to start the set. After tying the set at 7-7, the Timberwolves scored 11 straight points to go ahead 18-7. Knieper and Siperko both picked up aces late, but the lead was too much for the Bobcats with the second set going to Northwood 25-11.
The third set started with the Timberwolves jumping to a quick 8-2 lead, before back-to-back points for FSU. Kunkle had a kill followed up by and ace from junior Phoebe Lingold to make the score 8-4. Frostburg, still fighting, had a three-point run to pull the set to 15-10, but Northwood would sweep the Bobcats to win the third set 25-13.
Knieper finished top three on the team in kills (3), aces (4), blocks (1), assists (1), and digs (3) in game two. Brunk led the team with five kills and Gonzalez Medina finished with 10 digs.
Frostburg starts the season off 0-3 after the long road trip. The Bobcats will play again Friday, September 13 when they face Point Park at 3 PM as part of the Vulcan Invitational. From more information, please visit frostburgsports.com
