DeMaio Nets 100th Career Goal, Women's Lacrosse Eases Past WVWC in Road Win

The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team controlled West Virginia Wesleyan from start to finish in a 23-2 victory on the road Wednesday evening.

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team controlled West Virginia Wesleyan from start to finish in a 23-2 victory on the road Wednesday evening.
 
After WVWC caused a turnover and got the first shot of the game away wide, FSU went on the clear and got the ball into junior Neila Haney, passing to senior Natalie Williams for the opening score. The sides traded multiple turnovers, with senior Megan Keller, juniors Sydney Stone and Jessie Bare, sophomore Abbey Warner, and graduate Camden DeMaio all racking up CT's before the latter's led to Haney earning another assist to Warner. Bare caused another turnover which led to DeMaio netting a free position goal, the 100th of her career. Haney followed with one her own and a solo effort after a senior Kerri Hayes CT.
 
A pair of saves from Wesleyan keeper Ella Gomez were followed by caused turnovers by senior Julia Badolato before Hayes got in on the scoring with a goal. A minute and a half later, Bare's third CT of the game followed a slew of Frostburg goals, with Stone getting a free position and Haney going back-to-back with assists from Williams and junior Daniella Boss, pushing the lead up to 9-0. With time winding down in the period, Gomez made two more saves while Hayes and junior Emily Lamoreaux caused two more turnovers to end the frame up nine.
 
It took two minutes into the second for FSU to get on the board, helped out by CT's from Stone and senior goalkeeper Grace Dickey. DeMaio went on a solo run while Haney fed Boss and Badolato tacked on a third within a two-minute span. Williams then put home her second of the day before assisting Lamoreaux, while DeMaio and Bare kept WVWC from doing much on offense. Inside the final three minutes of the half, senior Brittyn Leonard put her name on the score sheet, while DeMaio assisted Hayes and then scored from Leonard's pass just before the horn sounded for a 17-0 halftime advantage.
 
DeMaio grabbed the opening draw in the third before Gomez made a save, but Boss caused a turnover, picked up the ball, and eventually fed Stone for an 18-0 score. Wesleyan finally got on the board after getting the resulting DC, taking advantage of a free position for their first goal. Another free position went high, to which DeMaio passed to Leonard for a score at the other end. Three minutes later, WVWC took advantage of a Frostburg green card to score a player up at 19-2. A minute and a half before the quarter ended, it was Leonard's turn to score off a Wesleyan card, pushing the lead to 18.
 
Hayes opened the fourth with a caused turnover and solo goal, while also grabbing the resulting draw control to boot. She then continued to fill up the stat sheet by assisting on Stone's hat trick after the latter had caused another turnover. Gomez made a trio of saves throughout the next five minutes in attempts to keep Frostburg off the board, but sophomore Emma Raville netted a free position goal following a yellow card to make it a 23-2 game. Sophomore Kelly Johnson came up with FSU's 28th CT of the contest in the final minute, ending the scoring with the 21-goal margin.
 
Haney, Stone, Hayes, DeMaio, and Leonard all notched hat tricks on the day, with the former leading all scorers with seven total points. Hayes also led the defensive effort with six caused turnovers, tied for the third-most in a single game in program history, with Stone and Bare not far behind at five and four, respectively.
 
With the win, Frostburg improves to 8-6 on the year, while WVWC falls to 2-10. FSU is set to return to the road on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. against Charleston (WV). Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
