Haberkorn Nets OT Winner to Give Field Hockey Home Finale Victory Over Saints
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team defeated Maryville 1-0 in overtime to close out their home season on Monday afternoon.
In the opening quarter, neither side was able to generate much from their attacks, as the full 15 minutes went by without a shot. It would be the Saints to get away the first effort of the game, with Denise Van der Spuy being denied by senior Zoe Barnes six minutes in. Van der Spuy then had another opportunity four minutes later, but put her shot just wide of goal, taking the game into halftime at 0-0.
The third period looked as if it would continue the same pattern, however six minutes in a flurry of chances were created by both sides. Barnes made a stop on MU's Delanie Winkelmann, while at the other end juniors Mikyla Rineer and Emma Price were both denied, the former by goaltender Jojo Cox and the latter having her shot cleared off the line by Dorothy Fife. Maryville pressed for a late goal, earning a pair of corners in the final four minutes, but Barnes was up to the task, swatting away three shots, including a double save in the final seconds to maintain the deadlock.
MU continued their momentum into the fourth, forcing Barnes into a pair of saves within the first four minutes, while another shot went just wide of the post. Rineer was able to drive FSU up the field, putting a shot wide before Barnes was called into action again. As time ticked down, it would be the Bobcats to control the attacking opportunities, earning a trio of corners from which junior Bri Macchia put one shot against Cox and another wide, while senior Paige Leitzel was denied with 10 seconds to go as the contest headed to overtime.
Having found their offense, Frostburg dominated early on, as Leitzel nearly ended the game 23 seconds in, seeing her shot go just past the post. FSU earned a pair of corners where Leitzel and Rineer were both denied by Cox hoping to keep the game alive. Eight and a half minutes into the first OT period, another Bobcat corner led Rineer to insert to senior Aubree Dorsey, who passed to classmate Hannah Haberkorn on the right side, finally firing past Cox for the winner.
Both teams had 10 shots in the game, with the Saints putting eight on target to FSU's seven, as Barnes earned her second shutout of the year.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 4-13 on the year, while Maryville drops to 8-6. The Bobcats play their regular season finale on the road against East Stroudsburg on Saturday, November 1 at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
