Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to Slippery Rock
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team dropped their season opener on the road to Slippery Rock Thursday evening, falling by a close score of 2-1.
The game started with The Rock applying early pressure with three corners and two shots in the first seven minutes of the game, as junior Zoe Barnes came up big with saves on both attempts, allowing Frostburg to flip the field and earn a corner of their own. Graduate Emilie Bonhivert took the first shot of the game for the Bobcats at the 9:16 mark, moments before senior Zoe Reading scored the first goal of the season for FSU to put the team on top 1-0. Neither team put together anything on offense to round out the quarter, as the Bobcats held a 1-0 advantage after the first 15 minutes of play.
SRU opened action in the second, firing the first shot of the quarter, before receiving another penalty corner. Just over a minute later, The Rock slapped one into the back of the goal to tie things up at 1-1. Frostburg saw themselves with one corner in the second, leading to a shot from sophomore Gracie Daniels that went wide.
Senior Ava Waddell start the third with a quick shot just seconds in, as Bonhivert inserted the ball off another corner a few minutes later. Both teams struggled to find any opportunity offensively, as SRU sent a shot wide to send the game into the fourth and final quarter with the score still reading 1-1.
The Rock earned themselves a corner in the beginning of the fourth, allowing them to rip two shots at goal, with one being saved by sophomore Morgan Sparks and the other finding the back of the net for a 2-1 SRU advantage. The Bobcats put together a try off a corner, but were unable to get a shot at goal as time ran out, allowing The Rock to come out on top 2-1.
FSU went for four shots on goal, as Barnes picked up two saves defensively.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 0-1 to start the season, while Slippery Rock moves to 1-0. The Bobcats next welcome in Molloy for their home opener at 4 PM on Tuesday, September 10. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
