Fourth Quarter Shutout Leads Women's Lacrosse Past Golden Eagles in Road Win

The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team used a strong fourth quarter effort to defeat Charleston 17-9 on the road Saturday afternoon.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team used a strong fourth quarter effort to defeat Charleston 17-9 on the road Saturday afternoon.

Graduate Camden DeMaio took the opening draw of the game to get FSU set up on offense, but UC keeper Megan Liston made a stop on the first shot of the game, while at the other end senior Grace Dickey matched for the Bobcats. The sides traded turnovers over the next couple minutes until the Golden Eagles got on the board with a solo effort by Alyse Weber. After fending off a green card, Frostburg netted back-to-back scores with seniors Natalie Williams and Julia Badolato assisting junior Neil Haney and DeMaio, respectively.

Charleston swiftly tied the game back up off a free position a minute and a half later. Junior Jessie Bare picked up a caused turnover to shut down the next UC attack, while Liston and Dickey again made stops in net. Seeking a way to break the tie, head coach Steph King called a timeout to put a play together, which resulted in junior Sydney Stone being rewarded with a solo effort. FSU controlled the final three minutes of the period, holding the Golden Eagles without a shot while DeMaio was able to find a pass to junior Daniella Boss for a 4-2 lead after the first.

Bare earned another CT to start the third while Charleston was whistled for a pair of green cards to put Frostburg up a player. Boss forced a Liston save while DeMaio picked up another assist on Haney netting for a 5-2 advantage. Both sides were given green cards within the next minute and a half before trading quick goals as senior Kerri Hayes found Haney while a UC timeout resulted in winning the draw and answering 20 seconds later. Dickey kept the team ahead with a pair of saves while DeMaio slalomed her way through the defense for a solo goal to go up four.

Once more, the Golden Eagles immediately responded, taking the draw right to goal to get back within three, then as Liston kept Haney at bay, Weber netted her second to pull within 7-5 with four minutes until the half. Junior Izzy Kelly and DeMaio kept Charleston from getting any closer, both causing turnovers to put the Bobcats back on offense. Haney rewarded their efforts by getting fouled and firing home her free position for an 8-5 halftime score.

Liston earned a save to start the third, but junior Emily Lamoreaux immediately got FSU the ball back with a CT and groundball. UC fouled Badolato and Haney just 15 seconds apart, as both put away their free positions to move ahead 10-5. Sensing the game starting to slip away, the Golden Eagles called a timeout which seemed to have the desired effect. Willow Cooper netted a solo goal before assisting Darby Stolz 30 seconds later, pulling the hosts within 10-7. Frostburg struggled to find the target on offense, as they went scoreless for over eight minutes, as Cooper netted a pair of free positions to suddenly make things 10-9. Haney was able to nab the resulting draw, as DeMaio worked enough space to get a shot away, beating Liston for an insurance goal at 11-9. Kelly came up with one more caused turnover to ensure Charleston wouldn't take any further momentum into the final period.

A total of three cards were shown within the first two minutes of the fourth, with two going against UC and allowing Boss to find a quick pass to Lamoreaux out of a free position to grow the lead to three. Grabbing full control of the game, Frostburg pushed the advantage up to 14-9 after DeMaio found a cutting Boss twice in the middle for a pair of easy finishes. Dickey was able to continue the momentum with a save, then was helped out by a shot off the post. After gaining the clear, Lamoreaux was fouled going towards goal and put home yet another free position for a six-goal lead.

Looking for help from another timeout, the Golden Eagles were thwarted by Dickey before senior Natalie Williams picked up a caused turnover that led to a DeMaio goal. UC failed to get another shot away the rest of the game, as Stone put the final stamp on the contest with an easy finish past Liston off a Hayes assist, ending the scoring at 17-9.

DeMaio led the offensive effort with four goals and four assist for eight total points, while Haney tacked on five goals and Boss earned a hat trick plus an assist. Bare and Kelly dominated defensively with a combined seven caused turnovers and five groundballs.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 9-6 overall with a perfect 6-0 record in the MEC, while Charleston drops to 9-5 and 3-2 in conference games. FSU returns home on Saturday, April 19 to host Wheeling at 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities preceding the contest. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
