DeMaio Leads High-Powered Offense as Women's Lacrosse Earns Senior Day Victory

The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team controlled the final three quarters of play in their 22-8 home victory over Wheeling on Saturday afternoon.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team controlled the final three quarters of play in their 22-8 home victory over Wheeling on Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the game, FSU honored its 13 seniors in Delaney Devers, Krissy Milburn, Megan Keller, Kerri Hayes, Isabella Sansone, Natalie Crawford, Julia Badolato, Savanna Reitz, Brittyn Leonard, Isabella Brogan, Grace Dickey, Nicole Gray, and Natalie Williams as they round out their Bobcat careers.

Frostburg started the game with Hayes taking the opening draw while Badolato cut in front of goal a minute and a half into the first. The Cardinals answered back with the sides now trading goals over the next two minutes, as Hayes got free position score following a WU green card, while Klara Domachowska made it 2-2 with 11 minutes still to go. Both teams struggled to keep hold of the ball, as Wheeling goalkeeper Giovanna Perkins made four consecutive saves to preserve the tie, while Trinity Rose knotted back-to-back scores for the visitors to give them a 4-2 advantage.

Following a Bobcat timeout, junior Neila Haney came up with a caused turnover and scored as a result, while graduate Camden DeMaio was found by junior Emily Lamoreaux to tie things up at 4-4. Snatching a bit of momentum at the end of the frame, Sophia Cirone netted the quarter's last goal as Wheeling went ahead 5-4.

Coming out of the two-minute break, FSU was a team renewed with energy, as Devers made a goal-line clearance to keep WU out, while junior Jessie Bare caused a turnover to put the Bobcats back on offense. DeMaio tied the game at five apiece after slicing through the defense, then added another after Dickey made a save in net for a 6-5 advantage. There would be no stopping the Frostburg offense anytime soon, as Haney grabbed the resulting draw before being found for a score by Badolato, who then netted her own solo shot to surge ahead 8-5.

Bare, Lamoreaux, and junior Izzy Kelly each picked up CT's over the next three minutes, while WU was also kept out by the post before Badolato finally got a chance offensively for another score. She then passed to a cutting DeMaio for another while Hayes netted a free position that was her 100th career goal. Continuing to hound the Cardinal offense, Bare caused another turnover, while Badolato forced a failed clear a minute later that DeMaio took advantage of for a seven-goal lead. Kelly and Devers tried to keep Wheeling at bay with another pair of CT's, but the visitors finally broke a 16-minute scoring drought off a free position to go into the half with a 12-6 deficit.

On in relief of Dickey, Gray made a huge save in the first minute of the second half, while DeMaio caused a turnover and then scored back-to-back free positions at the other end to go up 14-6. After Devers caused another turnover after FSU had given the ball away, Badolato passed to Williams for a man-up score. Gray then shut down a Cardinal free position shot, as Lamoreaux led the counterattack with a free position goal, adding another a minute and a half later on a DeMaio assist. Frostburg continued to give Wheeling fits on offense, holding them without a shot for the final nine minutes of the quarter, while Hayes, Devers, Keller, and sophomore Maya Mosslih combined for five caused turnovers. With a minute to go before heading to the final period, DeMaio netted her eighth goal of the contest for an 18-6 score.

Junior Daniella Boss corralled the opening draw of the fourth with Lamoreaux scoring a quick goal off a feed from Williams. FSU peppered the WU goal with four more shots before Haney found the back of the net on a free position after Kelly gave her team the ball on a CT. Mosslih then picked up her third of the contest, leading to junior Sydney Stone getting fouled inside the arc and firing home the free position before a Devers caused turnover allowed her to make it back-to-back with Hayes getting the assist. The Cardinals managed to take advantage of their own free position, while Rose put the final goal home with a minute to go for the 22-8 final.

DeMaio was the driving force for the Bobcat offense, scoring a career-high eight goals to tie for the second-most in a single game in program history, while Badolato, Lamoreaux, and Haney each added hat tricks. Bare, Devers, and Kelly all shined defensively, combining for 13 caused turnovers and six groundballs.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 10-6 on the year, while Wheeling drops to 6-7. The Bobcats hit the road for their regular season finale at Davis & Elkins on Wednesday, April 23 at 5 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
