Five Score in Women's Soccer's Dominant Win Against TIgers
BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team got back into the win column with a comfortable 7-0 victory over Salem (WV) on the road Saturday afternoon.
Starting out with the majority of possession, FSU hit the front foot six minutes in, as senior Mackenzie Alonso fired a low shot into the left corner to go ahead 1-0. The Bobcats kept up the early pressure, earning a couple corner kicks, with freshman Ellie Fiedler drawing the first save of the match off Tiger keeper Sarah Cabera. Just a couple minutes later, another corner found its way towards the back post, eventually getting to junior Carly Gillette, who turned on her left foot and found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
Another six minutes went by before junior Morgan Mrizek had her effort saved, though that would be the only shot for either side until the 35th minute, where freshman Cassidy Paige saw one blocked and another go high. Going into the final five of the half, senior Madi Allen missed wide before junior Hannah Clagett had one last shot on target, right at Cabera for a 2-0 halftime lead.
Just two minutes out of the break, Frostburg worked an attack down the right wing, which led to a bouncing ball at the top of the 18, where freshman Rayiah Davis lashed a left-footed effort into the top right corner for her first collegiate goal and a 3-0 game. Four minutes later, the Bobcats won possession down the left side, as the ball found its way towards sophomore Chelsea Pettyjohn, sending the ball high into the box and settling inside the far post to make it four on the day.
Over the next 25 minutes, Frostburg peppered Cabera's goal with shots, forcing her into six saves as the pressure piled on. Inside the final 10 minutes, Clagett made a run down the right side and crossed into freshman Ariana Davis, who slotted home at 5-0. After another Cabera save, Alonso earned herself a brace, followed five minutes later by Rayiah Davis planting a shot under Cabera and into the bottom right corner to end things in a 7-0 Bobcat victory.
FSU held the Tigers without a shot over the entire game, while firing off 28 themselves.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 2-1 on the year, while Salem falls to 0-3. The Bobcats return to action for their home opener on Wednesday, September 18 for a 7:30 PM match against Point Park. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
